Well I may just be going to Sweet Lamb in September with Helmut (birthday gift to each other) to do a day's off-road training on a CRF250 as I enjoyed the off road Himalayan thing at the ABR so much......

Crf250l aren't the best option, but it's better than nothing :)

If you decide to buy at some point then just ask if you want my opinion?

Absolutely will, thank you very much :). You're the forum off road expert in my eyes!

I edited and removed the L as in fact don't know if it's L or R.....

An older Crf 250x would be a better option with far better suspension ;)

I'll be sure to let you know which variety we had.....at my skill (less) level, just getting off road and learning the very basics is what I am after....I don't think I'll be troubling Red Bull for sponsorship any time soon :p.

The main thing is to enjoy it!

Ensure the bike, especially the clutch bite point, suits your hand before you do anything. Be very picky ;)

Don't be afraid to decline or go around if you don't feel comfortable as there is no point in putting yourself off before you get started.

I've done the Yamaha off road school. It was a brilliant day even if I did run out of talent at one point. Always thought about doing something similar again. Maybe next year as we have spent this years pocket money on doing a Route 66 tour next month.

I have a thing about fasteners and always end up replacing quite a lot with either stainless steel or titanium. Wasn't overly keen on the original engine cover hex bolts so replaced them with Racebolt tapered socket cap stainless steel fasteners.

I have the Rally Pro 900 and haven’t found any vibration either. I’ve just short of 18000 miles on it in the three years I’ve had it it’s been to the French Alps 3 times, Provence, Italy including dropping it on the Col de Sommelier, Germany, Netherlands, Norway, Scotland 3 times and has never had any vibration either on or off road. I’ve ridden it on Autobahns at well over 160 kph and at walking pace and nothing, no vibration anywhere. They’re a pretty good all round bike.

Just bear in mind the tensile strength of fasteners that you choose to replace.
A typical cap headed bolt (allen key) would be 8.8 and some can be 12.9, these would be in highly stressed areas i.e. brake calipers.

The usual stainless steel fittings come in x2 numbers which basically refer to 304 (A2) or 316 (A4) stainless steel, there is others.
304 is the "basic" grade but wouldn't suffice in marine applications as they would corrode despite being stainless.

I always consider the tensile strength of the fasteners I intend to replace. Not an issue for engine cover fixings but for suspension and brake calipers I always replace with titanium. If the originals are high tensile grade 8.8 or higher then it is usually stamped on the fastener.

I take my hat off to anyone who takes one of these bikes off road.the thought of the expense of replacing broken plastics, levers etc etc doesn't bare thinking about.even a simple tip over off the sidestand wreakes havoc, bumping it up a high pavement is about all I would tackle :)

Do they come with grommet plugs to fill the original stalk holes

Yes. On my bike the brake fluid reservoir is attached to the original mirror mount so you get an M10 fastener to secure it when the stalk mirror is removed and a plastic plug for the other original mirror mount hole.

When I had my Speed Triple 1050 RS I replaced the original front brake radial caliper bolts with Pro-Bolt titanium fasteners. When I sold it I returned it to original and reclaimed the tititanium fasteners which are now on my new Speed Twin 900 as the length, diameter and thread pitch are the same. 20250811_135001.jpg 20250811_122510.jpg 0 20250811_122431.jpg
