I’m sure a little bit of disassembly will reveal the manufacturer and a bit of googling should enable you to order a brand new replacement without the massive factory markup or the worry of the longevity of a second hand £bay purchase

 

Agreed. I would also add that you shouldn't take the word of an AA patrolman. You need to do some checks of your own before spending on an item you might not need.

 

Take the starter motor off and check if it works. If it doesn't, strip it down, it could be just a broken cable or the brushes inside need replacing. Both much cheaper than the £70 ebay item.

 

Age and mileage any other similar reports from other owners any recalls warranty lots to consider before spending a penny

 

No disrespect to any of our roadside heroes but they are all just fitters now throw and replace not many real mechanics out there anymore in this throw away society no one fixes anything now that is under 50 it's just what people are now used to and expected to accept it can 75% of the time be a money saver it is quicker less labour orientated to just replace old for new (or refurbished) if you know of some older still in business companies I've been guilty of it in the past for example lower wishbones on a car I had the bushes were worn and resulting in a failed MOT it was cheaper to replace the whole wishbones than replacing the bushes because of the labour involved to force the old bushes out and press the new ones in (not all garages have these types of presses also) but another factor There wasn't a lot of difference in the purchase price of just the bushes to a complete wishbone so we are encouraged to follow this route another negative though first time I put a trolley jack under the replacement wishbone to change the brake pads it bent so obviously cheaper item than the original factory fitment

 

Last time the AA came out to me their guy managed to get a clump of blueroll into my engine and strip about twenty teeth off the timing belt luckily it survived and we repaired it ourselves. Still working so we dodged a bullet there all right...
