I wish to put bar end mirrors on my Thunderbird 900 (1996) but cannot remove the inner piece inside the bars that the bar ends bolt into. Anybody got any ideas please?

Why do you need to remove them if they are for bar end mirrors that you wish to fit? Unless they are welded in position they can usually be removed by by re-inserting the bolt and tapping the end with a mallet which should release the expanding bolt type insert.

Different size bolt hole unfortunately. I have tried reinserting the bolt and tapping the end and still no movement so as you say they may be welded in.

If the new bolt is bigger you could drill and tap the insert to suit or use a sleeve or shouldered bolt.

You need to adapt the new mirrors to use the original bar end bolt not remove the OE bar insert.
