The underseat USB socket on my Street Twin is unreliable. I know another owner with the same problem and have read of similar issues on this forum. So I'm considering fitting an alternative, which will power my phone and possibly a satnav. I want something that's conveniently situated up front, not inconveniently under the seat. It doesn't need to have the facility to connect to a battery trickle charger, I've got the Optimate set up fitted. I've seen Triumph's own Auxiliary Power Socket (part no. A9828015) at £32 but there's no indication of where it's mounted or connected. Anyone fitted one? Which reliable alternatives have other people gone for?
Give this a try. It only uses a 5amp fuse so higher loads (tyre pump) will pop the fuse. What about the Thunderbox unit with USB socket lead? Alfie
That's got the same Triumph part number as the one I looked at, yet it's different. Thanks Triumph for making things complicated I don't really want a socket tucked behind the engine. That would mean running a lead from the socket up to the bars. I can see me forgetting it's there and getting tangled when I step off the bike. Or running a more permanent lead under the tank, the end of which would be exposed when not in use. No, I want a proper, water-proof socket fixed on or near the bars, that I can just plug the phone into. I've just discovered Tony, who does the 'View from the Man Cave' vids on Youtube, extolling the virtues of a version from Freespirit. But when you add on p&p it's over £100 .
One of my lads has fitted one on his Honda somewhere near the instruments. I do know that it’s an eBay jobbie so you shouldn’t have much trouble finding it. Have just done a quick search and immediately found three dual outlet sockets all under a tenner.
I am interested in this same mod for my T100. I see the following in the fitting instructions for the auxiliary power socket posted above: "9. Locate the auxiliary power socket wiring connector which is taped to the main wiring harness in the area under the fuel tank" Is that present on a 2022 T100? No need to run a line from the battery up under the tank? Triumph has done that for us? Can anyone describe the specific location of that connector referenced in the fitting instructions?
If you go on the triumphinstructions.com website and put the auxiliary power socket wiring connector part number in you can download the fitting instructions. From the looks of it, it will involve removal of tank and instrument cluster. For your convenience follow this link where I’ve done this and all you have to do is press or click the union flag to get your download. In the event that the part number is not entered it is A9820115. I have just tried this and you will need to enter the part number and then click the union flag.
That looks a very neat solution (although not applicable to my Street Twin) but what a palaver to fit it and connect it in. But I know some people enjoy doing this sort of thing. However, I've just had a look at the equivalent part for the Street Twin using your link, part number A9828015. A completely different set-up, with the USB socket connected to the auxiliary power outlet (as with the T100) but mounted down by the engine! How ridiculous is that? If they can create a sensible mounting point on the T100 & T120 why the hell have they put the ST USB point down behind your knee!!!?
It almost certainly will be, check the date of the Triumph Instructions and which bikes they apply to, you can double check with a dealer as well: Triumph don't change things unless they have to. I've fitted the Thruxton Cockpit auxiliary power socket to my Street Cup and the connector was there waiting under the tank. I'm fairly sure that socket fits any of the Bonnevilles with double clocks i.e. Speedo and revs. Not sure that's the solution that @beerkat's looking for though.
It surprises me that Triumph doesn't jump all over this and offer a cockpit solution for the T100/120 that is easy to fit and high quality. My guess is that the vast majority of owners want to have power at the cockpit for one thing or another.
I'm wondering if this is the same one that rpg51 mentioned (above) in connection with the T100, which of course has the double clocks. I'll follow the suggestion from learningtofly and ask for the cockpit version for the Street Twin next time I'm passing Youles in Manchester, which will probably be service time.
To be perfectly honest I’d buy a five quid switched double USB socket off of eBay together with an inline fuse and run it straight off of the battery as you probably do for your Optimate connection. You can then site the thing where you want.
At present I use the OE underseat USB socket and have run a 2m lead to my diy Quadlock mount on the handlebar mount. Have not had any problems with it to date.
