Hi Chaps, I'm new to the forum and only took delivery of my 2014 speedy yesterday. I have, when the bike was delivered found that the engine management light was on. I have tried switching the key on and off and the light does flicker on and off and I have also run the bike til its hot and let it cool down twice. I havent had the chance to get out on it yet as I am away for the weekend, but the dealer said that it will clear when I run it for a few miles. They think it is just a low voltage on the battery as it has been sat in the showroom for a while. Obviously if it doesnt clear after a few runs then its going back to the dealer. Can you confirm if this is a common problem with these bikes and running it will clear the fault light? Many thanks in advance.
Usually it's 3 cold to hot starts so hopefully on the next one it'll go. But if not defo take it back to dealer, although I would have thought they would have checked and sorted it before sending it out
Thanks Crispey, so would I, they said that it was serviced and tappets checked etc. the delivery driver had unloaded it and gone before I had chance to really get into it.
It could be they serviced it with something disconnected like an air mass sensor on the airbox when they turned on the ignition (not necessarily started the engine) and the fault was recognised by the ECU, they really should have cleared it though. You could use a fault reader to identify the fault and clear it, cost about £15 off Amazon Just a precaution though, maybe write a letter or email so you have a paper trail stating there is a fault and unless it clears then they will need to sort it out.
Thanks for your replies chaps. It was just a bit disappointing and took the shine off of getting my new bike. Looks like my frst ride out will be to the dealer to fix the bloody thing. I will warm it up again tonight when I get in and see if this clears the fault as it will be the third one. Thanks again
Dazza. Ring up / email the dealer, explain the problem and tell them to get over to your place to pick it up and get it sorted mate. After all, you paid your hard earned gelt so they have a duty under the Consumer act or sale of Goods act to sort it free gratis etc. If you ride it to the dealers they could potentially say it was YOUR FAULT as it was OK when it left their place. Whatever you do, talk/email them first just to plank your pants. If they say you can ride it and it packs up on the way or causes some damage, again it's their problem. If you take before contacting them they'll say it's your fault and won't cough up.
Hi Chaps, A quick update for those who care. lol. I took it out on Sunday night for a quick blast. The speedo only works when you are accelerating hard and the rev counter doesnt work at all. The good news is that the engine management light goes off when youre cruising, (but thats only because the speedo doesnt work). Obviously I am taking it back to the dealer today so they can sort all of these issues. Hopefully I'll get it back all nice and shiny, (as youd expect a 2014 bike to be). because I loved the ride on Sunday and cant wait to get out on it properly.
Glad that the dealer is going to sort it all out, free gratis I would hope. All this 'modern' electronic crepe really does my head in at times, it might be good for keeping the tree-hugging environmental bunch happy(ish) but it's real pain the 'arris' when it goes all wibble
So. They plugged my bike into the diagnostic machine and the fault list was long and distinguished, from Canbus faults to temp sensor faults. They think it might need an ECU. would that reset the mileage on it??
You will all be pleased to know (I'm sure) that it was just some green corrosion on the pins of the ECU giving spuriuos readings. After a clean,spray and vigourous road test there is now nothing wrong with the bike. Woohoo!! Better still it cost me nothing.
Good news Daz. It's surprising how a little bit of sheite can really screw up these electronic thingies.
