Hi. I bought a triumph legend 1999 version. Strange history made in UK and exported to The USA then brought back to UK. Review by MCN say Legends are six speed but guy I bought it off says four speed. On the road he is right but is it possible Hinckley produced this bike as a four speed? I don’t want to have to split the cases to check for sure unless I have to.

There are no 4 speed Legends or any of the T300, T400 bikes. Some of the models have a 5 speed box but the Legend should be 6 unless it has had a 5 speed fitted later coz of problems.

I bought an X-reg Legend in August this year and it definitely has a 5 speed box. I believe it's the same box as on the T'bird but with the 6th cog deleted as part of the cost-cutting measures made by Triumph when they introduced the Legend as a cheaper version of the T'bird. Ther only other cost-cutting measures I've found so far are the black-painted engine (which I prefer) as opposed to the chromed engine on the T'bird, and the lack of a low fuel warning light which I find most irritating. Make sure you know where the fuel tap is and how to switch from ON to RESERVE when it starts to cough and splutter!
