Can someone tell me the original finish for 1996 Speed Triple exhaust downpipes, as I would like to restore them to original condition.

The factory finish on the exhaust and silencers was a bit special so you're unlikely to get EXACTLY the right finish but the downpipes (headers) were, I think, a satin black. Zircotec may well be able to advise or provide the correct finish - I have an unsubstantiated feeling that they - Zircotec - were involved in the development of the colour and finish.

The silencers were a black enamel at each end and a 'carbon' wrap between.

Many thanks again Aide. I’m still looking for a grab handle, seat cowel, front brake lever and toolkit. Then bike will be perfect.

    You are most welcome, Gordon.

I'll certainly keep my eyes open for the parts you're still after - though none will be easy to find.

In terms of outward appearance the Sprint Manufacturing seat cowl will be indistinguishable from the factory item, providing you get a good paint colour match and finish.

The grab handle is common to a number of models, including the Trident, so there's probably a better chance that you'll find one of those in a breakers, especially as the grab handle would need to be removed to fit the seat cowl.

Tool kits were pretty basic and in terms of the actual tools were much like any contemperaneous big Jap 4, the only obvious difference being the logo on the bag!

I'm guessing that you'd probably like to have everything 'factory standard' - as much as is possible 25+ years on - so, in that respect we're on the very same hunt!

    Hi Adie
Thanks again for your help, I’m getting there now. I bought the toolkit. I’ve just bought an original brake lever to replace the broken one, an original seat with the strap and a Haynes manual. TBH I’m. Or a fan of the single seat cowel but I’ll keep looking for completeness. Zircotec quoted £270+Vat, which seems reasonable. Nearly there now. I noticed on the side of each outside cylinder there are two small, what look like black grommets. I have one missing on each side. What are these called?

TBH I’m not a fan of the single seat cowel but I’ll keep looking for completeness. Zircotec quoted £270+Vat for ceramic coating on downpipes, which seems reasonable. I can try and sell my SP Engineering cans. Nearly there now. I noticed on the side of each outside cylinder there are two small, what look like black grommets. I have one missing on each side. Pleasure - any time.

The bike must be looking REALLY good now and we'll definitely need to know - and see - how the Zircotec finish looks, please. It seems quite rare to see a Mk. 1 Speed with the standard dual seat and grab handle - the whole ethos of the bike was to encapsulate the cafe racer look and the cowl was an inspired recreation of the "seat hump" of the sixties era and, to be honest, I can't recall seeing a factory brochure picture where the Speed doesn't have a seat cowl fitted! However, my memory is famously flawed so that's

The little black 'grommets' are just blanking caps. The modular approach of the earliest series engines meant that as much as possible of the complete machine was common across the entire range - frame, tanks, seats, engine block, etc., - and this meant that some fittings, fairings especially, when not present, left blind holes. Those on the cyclinder block would have had hole plug blanks in - small rubber bungs, essentially, that just pressed in to "dress" the hole - same formirror stem holes where fairing mounted mirrors were supplied. Get an idea of the hole diameter, do a search on blanking plugs/caps and see what emerges. I can't remember if mine have those still present but, if they do, I'll measure them and let you know.

Did you manage to get a new brake lever or second hand? I definitely need one for one of my Speeds so any informaion on that would be useful.

p.s. did you get round to Clive WOODS? :)

Yes I spoke to Clive, very helpful, was on the phone for ages. No luck with the brake lever. I found one on eBay from motorradteilehannover, purhased and paid for it, then got a message saying no longer available-system error. Gutted.
Really happy with grab rail for £35.
I will keep looking for the seat cowel - I suspect it maybe had one fitted originally, hence it is missing hte grab rail. It would be good to have both options.
When fit the grab rail, I am curious to know how it fits with the rubber insert between the seat and tail piece -I can't work it out, maybe a part is missing?

HA! Looks like we both tried to buy the one from Germany - with the same result! The 'parts pool' is not very deep and not very well stocked and it has a LOT of eager customers looking to buy the limited resources!!

I've got an early Daytona with the grab handle fitted so I'll take some pictures for you. Send me a PM with your mobile and I'll whatsapp the pictures to you but it will be later this week.

I am hoping the Classic Motorcycle Show in April will be fruitful. I have looked at a lever and cyclinder at Colchester Breakers - again on eBay. The lever looks rough but the pictures aren't great. It definitely isn't perfect but will possibly do until I find better one. I am waiting for some more pictures.
