On 23rd July last year I did my CBT. I had wanted to go straight to an intensive DAS course, but Covid delays meant that there were none available until winter, so I bought a 2009 YBR 125 and set out on my biking adventure; I loved it from the minute I sat on a bike. My first ride the day after I got the YBR apart from a quick local try - out on the local lanes was the commute to work on a busy A road and through the city I work on the other side of. I was quite apprehensive and found it mentally tiring, but it went just fine. Helmut and I had a few good trips out after that but the poor YBR (nickname, The Silver Bullet) turned out to have multiple issues and after it being with our friend who owns a motorcycle shop to fix on and off for a week or two here and there he and his wife made the extremely generous offer of lending me a Herald 125 that they had bought for his wife’s son but he hadn’t ridden it much and it was currently SORN. I couldn’t believe that people could be so generous, but they were!! The little Herald had been dropped, knocking a baffle out of the exhaust so it was noisy (very!), it vibrated like MAD (used to feel my toes tingle for hours afterwards), it was really uncomfortable for my ergonomics although others say they’re comfortable and had annoying footpegs on hinges not springs which you used to able to accidently fold up with the heel of your boot and faff around trying to put them back down with your foot waggling in the breeze….and I LOVED everything about it because it meant I had a bike. Helmut and I had a great summer doing some great rides and having fun, that little bike was good for miles and miles of riding. Pretty soon though I was riding it with the throttle at it’s stop and wishing I could wring a lot more out of it!!

Fast forward to winter time and I finally did my DAS - on a Suzuki Gladius and a Suzuki SV650. The bigger bike felt AMAZING to me the first time I got on it and I was so grateful to have got a few thousand miles in on the 125 as the bike controls were muscle memory by now so I just had to get used to the bigger bike. I would absolutely do the same again with the benefit of hindsight. The lessons went perfectly but there were a few bumps in the road with my Mod 1 due to nerves and stupidity really - but in January this year I finally held my full bike licence. My Mod 2 had been so, so cold and in slippery conditions but who cares - I was over the moon!!!

Exactly 6 months after doing my CBT, Helmut and I went out together for my first ride on my First Big Bike, my Street Triple R. It was freezing cold and I wasn’t sure whether I wanted to go far - the plan had been about 25 miles - but when we got to the roundabout we had been going to come back round to turn for home I kept on going and we ended up going for lunch; shivering like mad. The Street Triple blew my tiny mind .

From my very first tentative ride on the Street Triple it has blown me away, it feels perfect for me. A LOT of bike for a new rider, but it inspires a great deal of confidence and feels like a great fit. It has become a total obsession - I take it out solo, commute on it when the weather’s not stinking and of course go out and have fun with @HelmutVisor which feels absolutely brilliant!! I NOW understand exactly why he had always loved his bikes so much and how “a quick trip” for fuel or popping out to do something locally can turn into hours of riding.

Thank you to every one of you lovely lot who have taken the time to read my posts and provide me with encouragement along the way.

Photos are of the Herald on the day I picked it up, first ride on the Striple and now.

You seem to have caught the bug @Mrs Visor :) the first year on a motorbike is great, and it only gets better, and it's great that you have a partner that rides too

Congratulations @Mrs Visor Where's that twelve months gone? It is an inspiration reading your posts as it brings back the elation of my early rides and the pure joy of being out and free.:grinning:
Keep it going and stay safe:yum

Well done, quite a lot to do nowadays to pass the tests and probably all the better for it. When I passed the examiner just walked around the block, bit of a farce really. Anyway, you can't really explain the feeling of biking, you have to do it to get it.

    Congratulations @Mrs Visor

Gosh that year went fast and from reading of your progress on the forum (which has been very encouraging and entertaining) it seems the STriple is only getting faster.

From your posts I’m guessing that you live somewhere in or near Worcestershire, which is where I passed my test (Malvern on a Suzuki 250X7) 43 years ago. It’s a great area to ride in; West to Hertfordshire and Wales, South into Gloucestershire, East to Warwickshire, all sources of great biking roads that can develop all sorts of skills.

It’s also great that you can share rides with @Helmut Visor, I’ve no chance of persuading MrsRevPaul to learn.:(

Enjoy the rides, stay safe and keep posting:)

    @RevPaul Thank you!

I passed theory in Hereford, CBT in Worcester, Mod 1 in Shrewsbury and Mod 2 in Worcester. We live in Herefordshire (car tests only here) which is full of great roads (but terrible road surfaces) and I feel very fortunate to have them on my doorstep, we're in Wales within minutes few hence our frequent trips there (home of great road surfaces!!) but have also had some great rides into the Cotswolds and around Worcestershire too. Warwickshire we have neglected but do need to explore. I am itching to do some touring too but at present dog - care limits our trips to a day; still our time will come :).

It is great to be able to share rides with @Helmut Visor I agree - I hate being pillion so never used to go out on his bikes at all. It's amazing to now be on my own bike, sometimes I look at it in the garage because I still can't believe I have one o_O. Maybe you need a smart sidecar outfit for MrsRevPaul (more country lane pottering is what I picture rather than death - defying TT action) ;).

I'm late to respond to your wonderful thread, @Mrs Visor, but loved reading it! It has been so fun to follow your rapid progress...sometimes the testing wasn't so quick thanks to Covid, but your actual skills and joy grew by leaps and bounds throughout the last year and I'm glad that you've shared your journey with us. :) I feel as @Dawsy does about your anniversary post: It "brings back the elation of my early rides and the pure joy of being out and free". I wish you many, many more years of adventures and motorcycle joy!

It gets into your blood, doesn't it?

Mrs. Fork Lock was 17 when I met her in 1973. She was riding a 300 Honda Dream. After the first kid came along, she quit riding. Flash forward to when the youngest was about 13. She got the bug again, though I don't think it ever really left her. One day, out of the blue, after not having ridden in ages, she said she wanted to be in the wind again (She would NEVER ride as a passenger). Took her out to an empty parking lot and she jumped on my big Victory Touring Cruiser and tooled around like she hadn't missed a beat. Got her an 800 Kaw Vulcan Classic. She loved that bike and rode to work (100-mile round trip) nearly every day from April to November in any weather. Alas, in 2013 she was in a car accident that permanently injured her back and prevents her from riding. That poor little Kaw sat in the garage for five years before she was able to let go of it. It went to a good home.

Keep the rubber side down and ride on!

Thank you; it does indeed seem to get in your blood....I like the sound of Mrs Fork Lock!! I am sorry she is injured, having broken my back in a vehicle accident it certainly does leave you with issues (but I am very fortunate with the level of function I returned to - thanks to full time rehabilitation courtesy of the military).

BTW...it was 49 years ago that I met her.
48 years ago, today, that I married her.

Happy anniversary, Mrs V - what a great journey, both figuratively and literally. The Street Triple is a near-perfect bike, isn't it?
