For a couple of years in the early 70s I lived in Guernsey where the “national” speed limit is 35mph and in places in town this reduced to 12mph. During this time I spied my first 5.3 litre V12 E type Jag which did 0 to 60 in 6.8 seconds and a top speed of 150mph on the island.
I’m all for segregated cycleways, you only have to look at the Redway system in Milton Keynes that runs through the grid squares, not alongside roadways. But, having provided such a facility the “more vulnerable road users” should be made to use them and penalised for not doing so.
This is Plymouth’s first 20mph average speed camera zone, I live 200meters away. It’s a pain in the ass because you spend more time looking at you speedo and not the traffic and pedestrians It’s a true cash cow https://www.plymouthherald.co.uk/news/plymouth-news/20mph-speed-camera-old-laira-7044037.amp
So as you live so close were you consulted about traffic calming measures? From what I read about the locale in the link you provided viz narrow road, schools, shops and a nursery it would appear that there are good reasons for considering measures in addition to the usual speed limit. You say “you spend more time looking at you speedo and not the traffic and pedestrians”. Why? Surely you are more vulnerable to collecting a speeding ticket for a momentary infringement anywhere inside the limit whereas in an average speed limit you have the whole zone in which to bring your average within the mandated range. It would seem that you are really griping about the fact that this stretch of road is now “policed” whereas previously it wasn’t and you could get away with driving without due care and attention?
There is a primary school close to the 20mph road but not on it, the secondary school is outside the zone, the narrow part of the road is about 150meters long and there hasn’t been an accident for years. It’s a joke, pure cash cow and no I wasn’t consulted as out the intentions about implementing a 20mph zone, in fact I don’t know anyone who was
You haven’t explained why you need to look at your speedo more often in an average speed zone than in a conventional speed limit where, if recorded, a momentary lapse, at any point, could result in a ticket. Your issue would still appear to be the introduction of monitoring.
They haven’t just put a camera at each end of the zone, there are 7 camera’s along the length of about 1.25 miles so a momentary lapse could cost you dear
Plymouth is a city of 250,000 people and we have around 50 speed cameras including these 7. This story shows the location of all the cameras 4/3/21 but the red light cameras now do speed as well, this city has gone mad about speed https://www.plymouthherald.co.uk/news/plymouth-news/location-every-speed-camera-plymouth-5187677.amp
OK, but if it were an ordinary speed limit they could have a mobile camera anywhere along that 1.25 miles requiring even greater vigilance if you are determined to ride at the limit, assuming a zero tolerance policy exists.
