Those of you who are thinking about selling on ebay:

You can only sell on ebay now if you supply them with your bank details.

I had some bits and bobs to sell so I thought "ok, I'll stick my details in, sell my whatsits and delete the bank details after."
They then arrange a direct debit on your bank account to allow them to dip in if you owe them money.
So, ok, do the selling with all the faff with buyers trying to scam you arsing around with shill bids etc etc and then there's the wrapping, posting etc.
There's no payment into your bank until the stuff has been received by the buyer. So even though it's sold (with paypal the money would be available straight away) you need to wait for about a week for the money to be in your bank.
Then I discover that ebay take a fee for selling and a slice of what you've been paid and also a slice of the postage costs (cause they deem that to be part of your payment from the buyer).
So, any old end up, fuck that for a game of soldiers. I'll get out of that and delete my bank details now that everything is sold and after several weeks the money has been paid into the bank.
Oh no, you can't do that.
Press the delete bank details button and it says it can only be deleted if you put in another account number to replace it.
And then, getting the hump, I'll fucking delete my whole account then. Yes, they'll do that but only after 60 fucking days the thieving cunts.
You wait till I see the twat that's in charge.
I'll not ask him to pardon my French.

Well then I'm certainly glad I ripped eBay off a few times back in the day before I stopped selling on there altogether. I've never paid eBay a penny of their cut as a seller. They'd close my account, and a few months later I'd just start another one. Mind you I was never a big seller on there to begin with. I just unloaded stuff I knew would sell from time to time.

But yeah… f*ck those guys. These days I go Craigslist. I've sold quite a bit on there. I think the Brit version of that is Gumtree.

This happened some time last year IIRC, at which point I stopped selling stuff on there. Not sure why the previous selling setup with Paypal was axed as you can still buy stuff and pay with Paypal. I looked at the new selling rules with bank account details etc and just thought feck that!

I’ve fallen out with it for same reasons and makes me sick having to give them just short of 15% of what I get.

Haven't used ebay to sell anything for ages and won't be doing so either.
They pissed me off ages ago when I discovered that you cannot set the UK as a default location.
Facebook Marketplace is a much better selling platform - it's free for one thing.

I cant say that the above experience by IRON is my experience as a seller.
Yes last year they changed things and you have to have a bank account and money made for selling stuff has to go there instead of PAYPAL.
When i sell stuff i have it on there for 10 days and items always end between 1900-2000 so that hopefully folk are home when the listing ends. Assuming the buyer is prompt with their payment the money is in my bank account the following morning. I then shift that money into my PAYPAL which is my bike and car slush fund. I will then post the item.
As for their charges, i wait till they send me a £1 listing offer or 75/80% discount off charges, which they seem to do about once every month or so.
As for taking money from my account, that has never happened, they subtract their charges before they pay me.
Yes they take a percentage from postage but we know why they started doing that. ;)

eBay are so corrupt. As i said here before i sold an immaculate set of crankcases for a T140E to a creep IN Scotland. A few weeks he started a case saying i had sold him faulty goods. They contacted me with pictures of what i would have thought was a seized engine. I ask for the cases back the buyer refused. I ask to see pictures of the engine number and cases numbers again he refused. eBay said i was in the wrong. I ask them to please check the cases them self's and sent them pictures of my cases pristine. They said i was a in the wrong. They then with the aid of PayPal took my money from my bank and repaid the buyer. I again ask for the cases back they refused. I lost every thing. But not as much as they did as i closed the account being a top seller with 100% record and spending around a 1000 budget every year for my and my friends bikes. They truly are the scum they always have been.
    Joe.

I'd rather not sell at all than sell on Ebay. In fact, I'd rather shove wasps up my arse than sell on Ebay. :)

Eventually when I ride off into the sunset I'll leave PP hanging with a hefty knot.

There's means and methods to go about that.

What the OP says is not entirely correct. After eBay and Paypal split (in 2015, so not really 'news'), eBay had no choice, as a method of payment, to use the seller's bank details. I find this extremely convenient since my selling fees get automatically taken care of and so are the payments from my buyers. No more need to login into Paypal and withdraw the money to my bank account is an advantage IMO.
There is a processing time after the sale (after the buyer pays to be more precise) but they do NOT wait for the buyer to get the goods. eBay is not an escrow. In my case I generally get the money 2-3 days post sale.
As for the 'bank account details' on file on eBay it's not an issue since I simply use my Revolut card IBAN (I assume you know what Revolut, or other fintechs, are) and automatically get the money into the card, ready to be spent, and get notified in real time.
As for the fees, listings are 100% free, and they take 11% (in Europe) including VAT on the money you receive (so yes, on postage too), but I think is fair. I've sold lots of unused stuff on eBay which I wouldn't have sold in any other way.

@BoredFish I never said the ebay-paypal split was 'news' and yes, ebay did have a choice as they used paypal for some time after their split and could have continued to do so.
When I sold recently I had to wait until the buyer either received the item or ebay decided that it had been enough time for the item to have been received.
Then the sale money less the fees (and their percentages on both sale and postage) was released to be paid into the bank. I then got the money the following day. Overall this worked out to over a week before I had any money in the bank.
Ebay said that this is their policy with new sellers (even though I have had an account for years) so, yes, for new sellers, until you have the required number of sales, they are an escrow.
I am now waiting for the required 60 days for ebay to close my account and remove my bank details from their records - there is no other way to remove them - I asked.
I'm afraid I don't have any cards so no, I don't know what Revolut or any other fintechs are. Sorry I'm a bit thick that way. Not everyone wants a smart phone App.
Listings are not 100% free and I do not consider it is fair that they take a percentage of money that I have paid for postage.
I'm glad you wouldn't sell any other way but I can assure everyone that what I have said is entirely correct in my experience with selling on ebay.
I was trying to let others know of my experiences, in the same way that I try to involve those who are interested in my motorcycle experiences as well.
Maybe that's what I should stick to just in case someone comes and points at me.

Ebay never used to charge a % of your postage but when sellers started taking the piss ie sell an item for £1 and charge £100 for postage Ebay had to do something otherwise they wouldn't have a business.

I only ever sold on ebay when they had the sell for a pound promotion on. Once they ditched paypal I've stopped selling with them altogether. Greedy cunts. I'll still buy from them but will never sell

Just sold 2 items on EBAY last night at 1930 ish for the grand total of £52.75 inc postage.
Buyers paid fairly promptly, EBAY paid me £50.80 at 0631 this morning, i transferred that at 0715 to my PAYPAL account. Cant fault that.:blush::blush:

Send recorded signed for, if the buyer says they never got goods - ebay refund them the whole amount. And yes - my wife has been caught out by this.....
