Excellent but nope, sorry. (5 days to go, it's gonna be a massive rubbish climax on 1 Feb. Assuming no one guesses of course )
Have been sat around the house while it's been a bit chilly getting twitchy. Thankfully the temperature went up just enough to allow me back to the garage. In the interim I'd bought some glass fibre making bits and talked to a local guy about making a seat base. It sounded pretty straight forward yeah right. I'd got two holes in the made metal base to allow for the mudguard and also to keep a gap above the battery and electrics. So I cut out some cardboard and stuck it all up nicely with some duck tape. I'd seen guys on "watch me bugger things up on youtube" and decided that doing resin splashy stuff while it was on the bike was risky, so do it on the bench Luvly, I'd watched guys wrapping their bikes in cling film to allow the glass fibre to be peeled off after it's gone off so let's do that. I couldn't do the stretchy thing to make the cling film actually cling (like you do with your sarnies on a day out) so it just sort of sits there being no use to no one. With hindsight I should have used aluminium cooking foil I think.
Any old end up, I didn't think to nick any of that out of the kitchen and was keen to get on. So sort of guessed the mixing rate as "a pea size in 10ml" doesn't really help when you got those stupid thin rubber gloves on that are 16 sizes too small and a can of resin in your hand. Well, that was a right arse to get on. I thought it was gonna go all 'limp' when it got the resin on it. Nope, it would have been easier to cut loads of thin strips rather than 9 inch squares. Once your hands and brush is full off sticky gloop it's really bloody hard to take the layers off and try to cut them up. What a bloody mess. Buy a whole box of rubber gloves. So after a load of mincing about like a right tit (the left one was ok) and shouting at Women's Hour on Radio 4 I managed to get something approaching looking sort of ok. It was a right bugger to get the stuff to go round corners as it just creeps back up again. At least you can hit metal with a hammer. It had sort of gone off by the time I'd done this first 'layer' so had a go at lifting it. It made cracking noises so I left it alone figuring another layer would help. Then stuck on another layer consisting of what seemed about 500 inch wide strips. There were 'hairs' of the previous layer that were sticking up that I hadn't seen so this layer has a few bumps in it. Oh well, we'll see what it's like in the morrow. I might be getting the welder back out
Yes and no. I'm planning on drilling the fibre glass through the metal frame that I made and fibre glassing some bolts to allow the fibre glass to be bolted to the metal frame. I'll then cut the foam I already have to form onto the fibre glass and try to use the cover over that. If that all works then I'll pop rivet the cover onto the fibre glass. If it's ok then I'll bolt that to the fabricated metal frame and Bob's me whatsit. I could've just used the metal frame but I will probably cock it up so this way I can dump the seat and go a different way. Well, that's the plan .......
There's a kind of "positive negative" about all of this - at least we all now know that the "mystery box" positively does NOT contain a glass fibre seat base kit - or even a glass fibre seat base! Nice work, Iron. You are a brave man to bare your restless, creative soul to us heathens for the sake of your peerless art work.
I love this thread - great to see it all coming together. Does the mystery box contain a terracotta pot?
