Hi there, As you can tell from my name, kinda a dummy. Anyway I have an older bike I got from a relative. When it was just kicked over it ran like a champ. After an hour of riding it started to backfire then bog down. I couldnt really go up any hills and had to keep the throttle pinned to get anything out of her. Choke was all the way off. Would still idle just fine but when i put it into gear I had to crank the throttle. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks
Hi, are you sure the choke is off as you have to tension the cable for off as this lifts the choke slide.
Its very hard to say what your problem could be without first doing some basic checks, are the points ok or possible that one of the condensers has broken down, tight valve clearance and the list goes on. Fuel filters in the fuel taps blocked, idle circuit blocked in carb, lack of compression, faulty plug or gap, i would check all the basic settings first and then go from there.
If the bike has been stood around unused for a while, there could be muck in the bottom of the tank which has got into the carb. Clean out the carb (the float bowl could be full of all manner of sh1te), check the jets for blockages and fit an inline fuel filter. I agree with DD about the Redex or whatever the American equivalent is (essentially a fuel system cleaner and - in the good old days - marketed as an 'upper cylinder lubricant', whatever that is!). Works well on my Trident which, sadly, has too many protracted periods of lack of use at the moment.

I'd be interested to run some queries on the forum database to see what the average lifetime of a member is (on the forum, not their actial life ) and medians for number of posts etc. I expect only Rob could do that, of course, and I don't supposed he can be arsed.

Have to agree with Joe, it doesn't hurt to say thanks for the help or kiss my ass. It is usually the ones who post a problem on their first post who do this, if they have taken the time to introduce themselves and posted a few times they tend to be thankful. It is not just about being thanked, it is the fact that the help given can be of use to others with similar issues or not as the case may be.
