I will shortly be down to having to manage with just one bike, in all likelihood. That means l ought to look for a bit of an all-rounder. I like a bit of speed, comfort and luggage capability. The obvious Triumph is a Tiger 800, but l don't like them. I rode a Z1000SX a few years ago and was pretty impressed, and l'm a bit of a Kawasaki man. So anyone on here own/owned one? What are your thoughts? :)

I did a few years ago. Never could get the thing to run right. I have a friend with one and it is an awesome bike.

I know a guy who has one (a complete nobhead by the way:grinning:). Also has a few Suzuki's and claims he doesn't really like the Z1000 but it's the only bike I ever see him riding! Been all over Europe on it a few times so it can't be too bad!

The problem with adventure bikes for me @littleade is that I consider them, without exception, to be butt ugly. And they're usually a bit on the tall side for me, not that it matters. I'm old school fairing and weight forward a bit. In truth, there are very few bikes that I'd really want to own. :)

The other constraint I'm under is price. I can't spend more than around £6,500 on the bike so chances are BMW and suchlike are out of my price bracket. :)

Its that time of year. Deals are to be had out there so just throw a figure at sellers and dealers if they don't comply move on to the next. It works for me.

The older ones seem to have a handling/fall in issue at the front end?
No idea if true but apparently its been rectified with the newer ones.
Cracking bike though either way. Can't argue with the sales figures!

Correct. With what I'd have to spend I'm just about in the revised model range, with multiple engine modes, improved suspension and seating. I really can't see much I fancy, got a bit spoilt having different bikes for how I feel or what I plan doing, I guess.....

Honda VFR is the only other bike that comes to mind. Never actually riddin one but the V4 appeals. Met a Canadian guy at our hotel when we were staying in Horta, he was touring on an old Ducati SS with the wife on pillion. Had massive miles on it but he seemed to have faith in it, not sure I'd share his faith though.

I've had a couple Andy. I preferred the older gear driven camshaft one. V4 I reckon is the best sounding lump you can put in a bike, mine had Leo Vince cans and sounded pretty damn good. I like the Z because it has plenty of shove, good luggage options, and it's a Kawasaki, so will go for miles and miles without bother. :)

PS and available in bright green....

I’d heard that the early ones were very snatchy on the throttle pick up but this was improved as the model progressed. They’re a good all round bike well capable of lots of miles at good cruising speeds and the luggage suits it well I think. Good luck with the search Alan.

All depends on what you want from the bike I’ve always liked big Kawasakis, had several Gpz Gpx and Zrx so I’m biased I was looking at the Fz1 for springtime but now seen a few Z1000 bikes and cganged my mind, the early quad pipe bikes are fetching string money but I like the 2nd edition pre SX so may well be my next bike

Does it have to be a newish bike? The VFR's been mentioned but what about the CBR's from the 90's and early 2000's? Even the 600's are nippy. The 1000's are fast, comfortable and can be set up to carry a lot of stuff. The Blackbird, for example, always gets favourable reviews. The CBR's aren't tall bikes, they're relatively cheap, have reached their lowest depreciation point and are on the way up, so you won't lose out (unless you throw it up the road) and they're made by Honda so general reliability and quality is good.
Something decent will be around half your budget. Keep it for a couple of years or so and get your money back when you sell it.

I'm also Kawasaki fan, had a few over the years. I rode a 1000SX briefly a few years ago and thought it was OK but not a match for the ZZR I had then and still have. The SX has been updated a couple of times since then. £6500 should just about bag you a gen 2 ZZR1400 if you want a faired, long distance mile eater with blistering performance. Probably a bit sportier than a 1000SX but without the bespoke luggage option but I just use soft throwovers.

Thanks for the suggestions chaps, maybe a quick background recap is in order.
Had a ZZR1200 for 16 years, loved it but I don't want anything that big again. I've had two VFRs and don't want another. I'm looking for a bike to replace my Sprint (now gone) and my Speed Triple (due for collection Jan 16th). I will almost certainly sell or p/x my Bonneville to make space and a bit more cash to allow me to continue to keep one bike to do everything, fingers crossed. So based on all that and my personal predilections I've arrived at the Z1000SX, as a bike that I can actually tour on as well as blat around on. Otherwise maybe I'll pick up a Falco for the occasional Sunday out. :)

Count on it dude. I rode one of the early models and was impressed, but finished up buying a 1050 Sprint ST. As you say, no shortage of positive opinion on the net. :)
