Hi all, I was hoping if someone could help me out. For my Payday project I'm considering getting an x-pipe somewhere next year. As I do ride into Germany quite a few times in summer that's why I'm a little hesitant.

I know that the German police is quite strict when they pull you over, they check the decibels from the exhaust sound and if you are over the limit, you pay an immediate fine and have to leave the bike standing.

Anyone have any experience with the decibel levels when installing an x-pipe? I already had a little chat with Sam from Motone over this and he wasn't aware of any issues and he sells a lot of x-pipe to Germany apparently.

Can't really seeing it be a problem BP.

I had a motone x pipe recently fitted to my bonneville speedmaster. It's deepened the exhaust tone slightly to a nicer rumble. It's nowhere near as loud as a race pipe. Added bonus, the engine spins up noticeably quicker.

    Hope this helps.

I once was lucky to see them chase after some one. Damn those dudes can ride fast. Side paniers scraping and all.

Having toured in Germany I can’t remember having seen any police. I guess I must have but not having pulled a bike over?

It’s usually on the high motorcycle traffic roads that they tend to be checking. Especially in the weekends.

Who wants to ride on motorways anyway? Stick to the twisties.
Got the Motone X-pipe fitted. It's changed the sound in a good way and the bike runs much better, just like Johnjo says. You can't see it when it's fitted. Go for it.

German cops in areas with heavy motorcycle traffic are trained. Don't ever ride in Germany with the baffles (or dB-killers as we call them here) removed. They see the difference and pull you over, first you get a heavy fine, then you have e few options: you put the baffles in, or you leave the bike, or they contact a local dealer who installs new exhaust pipes (at your cost). No joke. When I know we will be crossing the German border, even for a short while, I put the baffles in! As far as I know they don't check if the catalytic convertor is removed, yet...

Bloody hell, haven't they got better things to do? Sometimes I feel cops go out of their way to make themselves unpopular. I know they don't make the law but you'd think they could just give a warning and allow you time to sort it before having it checked again. You might have just bought the bike and have no idea that the exhaust was dodgy.
I've got a German cousin who rides a bike, I'll give her a call to see if she's had problems.

I imagine you’ll be okay as long as you don’t start removing baffles.... likely you’ll get more of a change in the exhaust note than the decibel levels themselves.
