Driving Me Nuts!

    I am trying to get the rear wheel nut off the left hand side of my 2002 Speed Triple 955i...and can't budge it!

    All I want to do is service the hub...but failing at the first hurdle!

    46mm...and f'in tight!

    Had the local bike garage get their 90psi windy gun on it and no joy.

    4 of us (one on the front brake, one on the rear brake, another body holding the bike, plus the man with the socket) all tried to do it manually using 3ft of breaker-bar...but STILL no joy.

    It's a sacrificial nut, and the 'dip' was taken out before we started....

    Any suggestions on how to get this moved? The RHS moved no issue with the gun, but this side is not playing ball...

    Now home and lubed with wd40...and will douse for a few days...but any further suggestions welcome.

    Considering heat, but worried about the cush drives (rubber?).

    The nut will need replacing anyway I guess so could always destroy it with a Dremmel...?

    Is it a left or right hand thread...out of interest!?

    Many thanks for any hints, tips, tales of joy or woe...

    Oh...and, does anyone know where to get a new nut from!!??

    It’s a normal left hand thread so the breaker bar if placed at the nine o’clock position should go down to loosen, if that makes sense. However, you seem to have done everything to get it off with the windy spanner etc so if it doesn’t move after a soaking with WD40 or penetrating oil I’d be tempted to destroy it by either using a grinder or hacksaw being extra careful to avoid damage to the threads.
    I’m sure I’ve seen the nut on eBay but failing that it’s either dealer or online at world of triumph or Fowler’s.

    I backed mine up against a wall so it couldn't go backwards, and taught it to know its place with a 24" breaker bar. Nae bother :)

    I think Andy means it's a normal right hand thread BTW

    Not WD40, something actually designed to help dismantle things, like Plusgas

    Looks like there's a bit of thread sticking out, so you should be able to work that out by looking at it.

    Find it on a parts diagram to get a part number then order it from you favourite parts supplier, like Fowlers.

    Sorry, l'm 180 degrees out of whack here-you want the axle nut off. My method won't help you there.....
    Have you unstaked the rim of the nut? It has a soft outer which you punch into a detent on the axle to prevent backspinning loose :)

    Wow, that is some stubborn nut, it's clearly seized solid. You've tried all of the usual methods except heat. I would give it a go. The rubber cush drive is pretty solid but you're right, don't let that area get too hot, but maybe some gentle heat will break the bond.

    I will:
    Get some plusgas...mainly because there's a really buxom lady behind the counter.

    I will check that it is a standard RH thread (but Loosy lefty).

    I have already located the item at Fowler's.

    I will try the breaker again after a good lube.

    I may try heat - what's inside...is it unwise?

    Failing all this
    ....I have a grinder....

    It's a normal RH thread, done it on a Sprint and a Speed Triple. It can only be a question of applying sufficent breaking torque. I've actually got a three quarter inch drive breaker with an adaptor for when things get really tough. Only used it on cars though....:)

    What's "inside" will some heat damage anything?

    I'm guessing the cush drive is just inside that cush outer...and I assume it's only rubber...and so heats not so good...

    If you look at the pic, you can see what @Smilinjack means. There's a punch made on the nut that stops it rotating. You can Actually see it on the pic (about 7 o clock)? There's a grove in the thread.
    You need to get a screwdriver in there to prize it up first.
    It's on all single swing arm models.

    I agree that’s the procedure but I couldn’t get a screwdriver under the nut to prise it up and ended up just putting force into the breaker bar which got the nut undone without damaging the threads.

    Actually...I do have an impact wrench and a lump hammer....I may try that...
