In 19th century America, I believe they used to hang horse thieves.

Motorbikes are the 21st century equivalent. We could learn a thing or two from 19th century America.

I guess the point of studying history is to learn from it… the various good and bad points inform our decision making one way or another.

Hi Pegscraper, I am really pleased that you have your machine back, if you are thinking about some extra security a tracker is really worth thinking about, there are some excellent systems out there, also they can be fitted in very hard to detect places even for the most sophisticated criminals. Unfortunately most motorcycles are stolen by organised crime gangs, the main players target certain makes and models, they then supply those details to those involved lower down the chain, they target the machines and then steal it, often they have "spotters" who look at different aspects such as social media, often posing as legitimate people on motorcycle forums, Facebook, Gumtree etc etc. once they identify a machine they steal it, they then store it at a location from anything from a few days to weeks, this is to ensure it is not a sting operation, once they think all is safe the motorcycle is then shipped abroad, usually Eastern Europe, in some countries it is legal to keep a stolen vehicle machinery etc etc, if the person states they bought it unknowingly to be stolen. Vehicle theft especially motorcycles is very lucrative for these organised crime gangs, with less chance of being caught than that of drugs, and possession with intent to supply carries very heavy penalties compared to that of organised motorcycle thefts. If a motorcycle is stolen that has a tracker fitted and the phone alert shows the location, my advice would be by all means go near to the location but do not attempt to recover the machine yourself, call the Police and advise them of the circumstances, and that you believe it was stolen by organised criminals, the reason for not breaking into the premises yourself are complex and could lead to you being prosecuted, also the storage facility would be left unsecured with a strong possibility other stolen machines are there, and the Police can gain vital intelligence, these criminals can become very violent, and I mean violent, unless a person is completely confident they can overpower 3 to 4 armed criminals who often carry machete's, knives, baseball bats and even guns, then you can see how it would play out. In all the years I worked in the CJS the one thing that frightened even the most hardened criminals was a "well trained dog" and the thought it may attack them. Biker Biker are a group of people who began recovering stolen bikes 10 years ago but only started publicising their activity last year. There are 19 bike groups spread across the UK from Scotland, to Brighton and across to Wales, who are trying to track down stolen bikes and raise awareness of motorcycle theft. Biker Biker work with local Police who are very supportive, Biker Biker are not a Vigilante Group, nor do they give chase, if Biker Biker locate a stolen machine they call the Police, they also have a live facebook page. Once again Pegscraper I am really pleased you have you machine back. Ride safe all and be careful

Not being a legal expert I can’t comment on if that fabulous idea would contravene their precious human rights but am guessing that it might - at least for a minute or two.

    So true. Great advice.

I PM’d a forum member a (long) while ago about a photo they posted. It had nothing more than the bike and the road in the background. Another shot had his front wall and neighbours house (but no house numbers visible). No meta data etc just visual clues and a hint on general geography from previous posts.

It took 5 mins to locate his house.

I could even figure out the time of day…

Good job I didn’t want to steal his bike.

    Criminals can do this too…

Yeah… Britain's non-stop 19th century wars were so much more delightful than ours.

Ours were so much smarter. Our troops dressed up in bright high viz (of their time) uniforms and stood in neat easy to hit rows.

Not like your riffraff that dressed up in camouflage to trick the enemy. Oh, sorry my mistake Roger Rangers were ours. Who would have thought…

Sadly our run of good luck ran out (other than losing the independence battles - which if you must know was deliberate).

Oh no wrong again Brits taught our US (best) friends (I mean that sincerely) a lesson recently in exercise battles…

Apparently a US military senior suggested the defeat by a tiddly insignificant country of fcuk wits (my opinion not his) only won because his forces have been training against micro aggressions in the military whereas we just like killing people. Apparently. Allegedly.

Several years back I asked @Rob if it was possible to strip the metadata from all photos posted on this forum, which he did, hopefully that's still active (I haven't checked lately). Previously photos taken on smartphones etc were giving location down to a few metres.

It was ditched purpose to show them ground crews the importance of removing engine covers…

So many preflight checks must have been skipped…

The big red covers over the engines should have been an obvious hint…

Sorry mate. We have so much history it tends to blend in together after the second thousand years.

I am kidding and not taking this seriously.

However, I enjoyed visiting that bell in Philadelphia. So quaint.

    ;)

PS: No irony that it’s cracked.

Welllll… Afghanistan is a classic example. We go in for a fight helped by the support of the EU Human Rights laws etc. We have to accept everyone is a civilian unless obviously not. The bad guy’s aren’t stupid and can work out within minutes that they dress as civilians and not a regular fighting force - contravening other laws but hey, they don’t give a damn. They take a shot at our troops and immediately lob the weapon over a wall. Our folks can’t do anything much about it as they’re now chasing a civilian that can’t be distinguished from another.

The Russians however went in hot and still lost.

Maybe the power of opium is seriously underestimated.

"Poorly armed natives." Yeah... right. Nothing say's "poorly armed" like DSHks and ZU-23's.

One should probably do a little more research before arbitrarily classifying them as that. Ask me how I know.
