Hope you have better luck than me Steve. I had a slow puncture which was a nail right in the middle of the tyre. Now not usually much of a problem but my local (mate rate) bike shop where I used to have all my tyres done struggle with the BMW wheels cos theres not much of a well in the rim and they don’t want to risk damaging the rim or the tyre so I took it to National tyres who were able to take the tyre off ok. Problem is they (National) won’t repair the tyre nor would they refit the tyre which my mate was willing to repair. Only saving grace was the cost of a new tyre was only £5 more than the internet price and it was fitted and balanced.

Yep hoping it can be repaired. Mind won’t be the end of world if I do need to put a new tyre on. Fingers crossed.

That is some serious tyre wear Andy. Can you get a harder compound to replace them with?

My tyre has been repaired by local tyre repair man. Only £15 for the repair. It is the first time that I have had a tyre repaired, so I’m hoping that I won’t have any problems. What are folks view on tyre repair vs a new tyre ?

I've had tires repaired that had slow leaks with varying degrees of success. I advise to watch it closely with an eye toward replacing it if you feel anything off about it at all.

Unexpected problem there... all the sports touring tyres seem to go up to a 190 rear, these are 200 and came with sporty Bridgestone s22's on. Was very impressed them, so much so I'm putting them on again and kind of an experiment to see if off the shelf lasts any different to factory fit. Will have to find an alternative for touring though, even if it means fitting a 190 which I think is ok to do.

I’ve had no problem with any repaired tyre, either car or bike, apart from paying ten times what you did cos I had to have a new one, that was a feckin problem.

It seems strange why KTM would change to a 200 rear? if the 190 is ok to use I'd be tempted to go with that otherwise it's going to get expensive!

Seems to be the trend with big bikes, maybe the tyre manufacturers will start offering bigger sizes in the sport touring category as more bikes go 200... hope so! I could be looking at 4-5 sets a year :joy:

Spent several hours hunched over bike with drills, burrs and USB microscope, tidying up the hole of the broken bolt I drilled out. By the time the thread became visible I'd already removed a load of thread :( After cleaning thread with a thread restorer tool the worst bit looked like this...

    2021-05-24-173037.jpg

Bolt still seems to fit snugly, and there's 5 extra untouched threads at bottom of hole after the 12 old bolt used, so I plan on getting a longer bolt and seeing how things go. The damaged threads act as a thread lock, so will use a high tensile bolt and copper slip, so I know I can get it out in one piece if needed.

Would like to replaced the bolt on the other side with high tensile one, but I'm scared of sheering old bolt.

Hell yes - the tyre wear is so bad it wore out the rims too.

NASA would say that’s fine. Close enough. What could go wrong. Etc

Edit: what does this bolt do? If it just hold the chain guard on we’re going to throttle you. :joy:

Edit 2: Ah, it holds pannier frame - found it (several pages back).

I've had no problems with tires that were repairable either, Yorkshireman. And I've had a nail in a tire on my Mustang twice now--once last September and again about two weeks ago. Both times the nail was pretty much dead center and repairable. And Ford did both repairs for free. I shudder to think what it'll cost me to get a new tire (or perhaps more than one depending on wear) if and when I get another nail in one of those fat sport tires. Our roads here are bad, unfortunately, with lost of crap o them in addition to the copious potholes.

This morning I decided to brave taking out the pannier rail bolt the other side to the snapped one, thought I'd try up to 50% more than correct torque setting and stop if it didn't budge - to avoid sheering it. As it turned out it needed negligible force, so it was too loose. Also discovered it was the wrong bolt, it was the original 20mm long bolt for fixing airbox, not the longer 25mm bolt that comes with pannier rail kit. (This rail was fitted by dealer before I picked up bike from new, other rail they added a few months later and that looks like it was the correct length bolt.)

I also found seal on the right of swing arm pivot isn't in straight. Fortunately it's part of the replacement seals and sleeves I ordered which is arriving today. So that's this afternoons job.

(Seal sticks out a bit on right which is also shown by angled pitting in sleeve - which is rotated 180 degrees in photo.)

Was hoping to have swingarm back in today, but one of the seals wouldn't press in with thumb, or with bolt+washers, so tapped it in with old seal as a drift, but it went in half a mm too far and inner seal lip got pushed up by bearing and snagged on sleeve when I pushed it in. So now got to wait for new seals to arrive tomorrow.

I also realised I'm probably not going to be able to torque things up in the correct order without a ratcheting torque wrench, so ordered one from Screwfix, hope they get it in tomorrow.

Total money spent so far as a result of that broken bolt: £535. Though £220 of that is on some tools I've been meaning to get anyway.
