    Morning all.

This week I took my bike in to have the suspension setup by people who actually know there stuff ,
I own a 2020 Speed RS and have been playing around with the suspension setting to try and find a good balance that suits both my size and type of riding .
I previously found the ride way too hard , hitting pot holes or bumps mid corner tended to push me very wide, and did very little for my confidence on the bike .
I had a play with the setting as per the manual and moved it too comfort but it still just didn’t feel “right”.

I decided to take to “FTR suspension” in Essex after seeing there name recommended a few times . Must say the bike feels like a totally different machine !

They took various measurements with me both on and off the bike ,they even predicted the issues I was having from the reading they took.
Then made the changes then re took the measurements.

In basic terms the setup had me sitting way too low in the suspension. Therefore the shocks and springs wasn’t able to do what they needed to absorb any bumps etc .

immediately following the changes they made the ride home was a joy . so much more confidence in the turns and therefore able to make adjustments to my leans much better too.

I’m by no means a pro rider, and no doubt the bike still has way more to give than I can use, but this change has feeling like I am getting so much more out of the bike than before .
I know there are gonna people saying this can all be done at home with basic tools and knowledge, but £60 to get it set up by people who do this for a living and clearly have a full understanding of what is needed is money well spent in my eyes .

Sure there are companies like this all over the UK and would recommend anyone who isn’t a expert in suspension to give it a go .

For those not as near to Essex, I took mine to Scotsus in Clydebank. Young Liam did my Speed Triple RS and Thruxton R. Took about 30 to 40 mins per bike and his attention to detail was a pleasure to watch. He certainly knows his stuff, plus he is a really decent chap. Took time to explain what he was doing as he worked. What an incredible difference he made. The bikes are beyond fabulous in the twisties. Highly recommended.

Too many people spend money on loud exhausts first, when they should be spending it on the suspension to get the best out of the bike.

Na, modern exhausts are too sterile and quiet. Standard suspension set ups are ok. I would go for a more fruity exhaust before tweeking the suspension. I honestly swear that a few decades ago my CBR600 with standard suspension set up used to look at me in a dispairingly manner and say" is this all you can do ???" The non standard exhaust though sounded FAB.

Na I disagree, I enjoy the bike more now now because of the way it handles , More than way I enjoy it the way the bike sounds ( I removed the baffle on the Arrows ) .
Suspension first - then exhaust, in my opinion of course - each to there own though

Glad to see it went well and nice to meet you in the dealers!
Hopefully it'll be the compliant bike you were hoping for and no rs1200 is reqd.
I'm going to do the same as you suggested in july at the same place.
    Thanks for your help sir!

Great to put a face to the forum name
As is said l, personally I think they were great , that’s not to say there may be others nearer to where you are ?

( off topic ) but as for the 1200, did you do a test ride ? How was it ?

I've only ever had one of my bikes suspension professionally set up, not because i thought it needed it but just out of curiosity really, the sag was already spot on and he didn't need to adjust anything on the rear, he adjusted a fair bit on the front suspension but the main thing he did was to reduce the tyre pressures by a lot as he said all bikes come with tyres pressures that are far too high, the only problem i found with the pressures being so low was that you had to really warm them up before they perform properly, so i reverted back to my usual pressures which are usually 3-4 psi lower in the rear than the recommended pressure and it always feels great to me. I'm on the heavy side (17-17.5 stone) and I've found that the standard suspension is usually pretty good, maybe if you are on the light side or a real heavy weight setting it up properly would no doubt make a big difference

I have also only had one bike professionally setup, an ill handling GSXR1100 back in '92 by Maxton Engineering. OEM suspension is designed for Mr Average Rider so if you don't fall into that category, setup can be problematic. It's all well and good having premium suspension components with multi adjustability but if you don't know what each adjustment does and how it will show itself on the road you can get into a real tangle. Riding experience undoubtedly plays a part here but a bit of research into how suspension works, what the adjustments actually do and how they will affect the handling is well worth the time and effort and means you stand a much better chance of getting the best out of a standard setup. Then you can start looking at component upgrades. On a bike with multiple settings for preload, rebound and compression damping I've always followed 3 simple rules:
    1. Note down the the base settings before you start.
    2. Make one adjustment at a time.
    3. Use the same route on your road test for consistency.

On the exhaust note , Ive had baffle free exhausts in the past, usually as part of a performance upgrade but avoid them like the plague these days, a right PITA.

First thing you should do when you get a bike, get suspension set up properly.

It's my next job after heavier fork springs, heavier oil and new tyres, m.o.t week and all being well book in at revs Halesowen after being recommended.

Maybe if you have a bike less than 5 years old, any older and I reckon sorting the sussers is a priority. Older bikes usually have a fruitier pipe on anyway

Judging by the reviews on most bikes in the mags, most need tweeking even when new.
New speed 1200 is a prime example.
Plenty of other bikes too and it doesn’t seem to matter if it's high quality ohlins etc, still seem to always be on the stiffer side as default.

Too true, I took my week old 1200 Speed Triple to Scot Sus in Clydebank for young Liam to work his magic on. He found the front was not too far out but the back was way out with hardly any preload or something, he did explain it but it was a week ago, how am I meant to remember ? He did tighten up the adjuster nut quite a bit then set the dials. I thought the bike was good when I first got it but it was significantly better after the suspension was set up. £80 well spent.
