Hi all, hope everyone is coping as best they can with whatever restrictions they have in place... Looking to do my first ever touring so any advice in general gratefully received. I have a 2002 Speed Triple and am initially looking for pannier advice. So what pannier rack or frame is available or experiences people have on this bike? It will just be some light UK touring. A small 1 person tent, a sleeping bag, a toothbrush and some spare pants. Actually, forget the pants. Thank you!
Do you need panniers for such a small load What about a tank bag and strap tent to rear seat. Does a 2002 Speedy have the under seat gold out hooks? Or you could B&B
Thank you for such speedy replies... much appreciated. I hear what is being advised,,,I'll take some pants. Let's pretend I am definitely taking a tent...does anyone have any pannier rack recommendations? I do like the idea of B&B...but think it'll cost too much. Budgets, like pants, are always tight!
so, my little learning curve continues, and I may go - initially at least - for soft/throw over pannier bags...any advice on these for the 2002 Speedy?
The best ratio price/usage I found was semi rigid pannier. I have Shad E48 within the universal shad frame. I had to adapt those to the bike, but they are fine. These are not waterproof, so everything in a handy bag and It's fine. Not sure it helps, but that worked for me.
Can't help with the recommendation for bags, I'm afraid, but can I suggest that if you do go down the "throwover" type route - or, indeed, if you use straps to hold bags/tents, etc., on - that you consider investing in some of this stuff for your paintwork in ANY area that the bags/straps might make contact with the bodywork? https://www.williamsmith.co.uk/product/3m-ventureshield You may be able to get a proprietary TRIUMPH Paint Proection Kit with precut pieces, but buying some on the roll will allow you to cover more areas and will be better value.
My choice, admittedly no tent or sleeping bag required, is a tank bag and tail pack for a long weekend: Givi XS307 Xstream Tanklock Expandable Tank Bag - 15L Oxford Lifetime T30R Tailpack - Black I have an eye on some Oxford panniers but am conscious of the added width of the bike. In addition to the likelihood I would end up taking far too much stuff that I didn't need! For me, being a sweaty chap, it's getting the right number of Tshirts that I struggle with, never run out of pants! Good luck in your quest and I'm sure you will really enjoy a tour!
DirtyDanny , I have a pair of throw over panniers which are unused. As picture, one has a slit about 20mm long on top, should be easy repair. You can have these for shipping cost if any use to you. I can see how small, or big they will pack into and get a price from Hermes to ship as they may not be the best but I think they are the cheapest. Ken.
I've got some Oxford throwovers, but my 2010 Speedy has high level exhausts, or did, which can be a bit risky. Givi used to do a pair of support frames for ST3, something like T702 they were. I bought some although never used them. Hopefully that will change this year, I'm hoping to ride mine to Spain. Might still dig them up on t'interweb
Probably not very helpful but these are my panniers fitted to my 2015 94R. If you insist on camping () it does leave you with plenty of room to strap your camping gear across the rear seat. The panniers are made by Givi and are expandable, but I suspect they don't sell them for the older models any more, their website seems to only show updated version for newer Speeds.
Thank you col_c. Are your able to say what the track is made from? Is it tube or bar, and roughly what diameter... I feel a small project coming on...
