Hello everyone. My name is Steve.... I just bought a 2003 speedmaster.... Having problems getting it started the past couple weeks and I'm looking to learn more about working on my bike. I replaced the plugs topped off the gas and I'm still having problems. It runs for several seconds off and on but then quits.. I cant wait to get this bike on the road!
sskijr Welcome to the family. Do tell us some more about the steed. Miles has it been laid up age and state of battery. But they are great machines and i am sure together we will have you up and running soon. Also hit the upload a file button bottom right corner and show of the beastie. Joe.
The battey is good. It turns over. it has 11000 miles on it. I just purchased it a couple weeks ago and rode it home... about an hour and a half ride. Here is a pic...
sskijr Might be good to dump the fuel in the tank and get some fresh also add a carb and injector cleaner just to flush the system. Do check for air leaks both inlet and outlet or split rubbers. Have a look at the plugs and see the colour and cleanliness Keep telling us all the results and i know we will sort it. Joe.
I replaced the spark plugs... and air filters. I added fresh fuel also. I'm not sure how to clean the carbs or check for air leaks.... I'm trying to learn.
sskijr Nothing wrong with that. At least you are having a go. Here on the home page someone mentioned a cleaner to mix with the fuel. Looking for air leaks around the inlet use some soap liquid and pay attention for cracks and small splits the exhaust just run the bike and you can see them or just gently torque them up. And do have a look at the plugs see the colour. Then in the dark look at the caps plug caps see if they may be arching out. I know this is like to much hassle but always try a the easy things first. And at the end of the day you may just have to admit defeat and get a dealer to give it a tune but you have a bike worth it so do persevere. Joe.
sskijr Please do we will get it I am sure. You know sometime if you run the fuel low it sucks in sediment from the tank. And there is lots more we can explore like crank sensors fuel pump but we will get you there might bankrupt you but at least you will have a fully functioning steed. Joe.
Welcome to the forum, skijr! Thanks for sharing a bit about your bike along with a nice photo of that good looking Speedmaster. Hope you get all the kinks ironed out! Enjoy the forum.
sskijr Well that's one sweet sounding machine you have. My own thoughts now it has sucked up some crud from the tank. Get a good cleaner through there and see how it goes. Make sure you haven't purchased duff plugs even try the old ones back in there. But it is simple whatever it is. Joe.
