To go along with this . . . there used to be a NASCAR racer named Dick Trickle (yes, that was his real name) who was infamous for smoking as he drove in races -and he drove a LOT of them. He even had cigarette lighters installed in his race cars.
Dick Trickle was a great driver, could drive anything, really good on short tracks. Couple of good guys raced wearing wingtip shoes! Dave Marcis and Bobby Allison too I think.
Google 'wingtip shoes'. Might be an American term, my Canadian grandfather I think called them 'brogues'. I wore a suit and wingtip shoes every day to work, standard issue - back when we used to dress for work, before 'casual' took over.
I remember the Transatlantic Races when Schwantz and Rainey came here for the first time. They were awesome, never seen riding like that, but Ron Haslam was scrapping with them on a bog standard VFR Honda
