The Orkneys are gorgeous. We sailed there years ago. Whilst we were there we rented a car and drove about, and visited Skara Brae. Very impressive. The Highland Park distillery is worth a visit, too.

A last addition - I found the French very courteous to bikes in traffic. When filtering they move out of the way, and even on dual/single carriageways room is made for bikes to pass.
The best one though was when I was hurtling towards the town of Besancon - I was overtaken by a French biker who made me slow down rapidly, just in time to point out a hidden speed camera... VERY thoughtful!

Twisty roads, delicious food, and beer! What more can a guy on a bike ask for? Outstanding thread, Vulpes!

A final note - if you go to France and it's wet, beware of the white lines on pedestrian crossings... They're ABSOLUTELY FECKING LETHALLY SLIPPERY!

    Very interested Vulpes, thanks.

I must have traversed a bit of your route some years ago. Had a 3 night stop over in Grenoble to " explore " a bit of the alps. You've rekindled my interest to go back there. :)

A pleasure, @Johnjo . It's definitely worth going - I intend to go back and do it again, but this time take the more easterly route via the Col de Bonette. I missed quite a few Cols there.

Brilliant Wim! Absolutely stunning! Brings back memories of northern Spain and the Pyrenees I done with Dougie last year. Some of those passes definitely trump the ones we were on. One for the to do list :grinning:

Just found this thread @Vulpes after seeing your dirty bike on What you been doing...thread.
What a tonic on a wet miserable Saturday in December! Especially this year when rides have been limited. I recognise those passes from watching the Tour de France on the telly but the views look so much better with a Speedy in the picture.
Thanks for posting the photos and videos Vulpes and making us all jealous, looks like you had a great time.

It was brilliant @Dawsy ... inspite of being on my own. Thoroughly recommended, and thanks for your kind words!

looked great Wim  even although the weather was a bit iffy at times. i really must try some of that fancy sea food as everyone who eats it raves about it (I'd have to blindfold myself first as it looks disgusting! :worried::scream:)

It was a brilliant trip, Dougie. Some bad wather, but fine most of the time.
As for seafood - give it a go, well worth trying!
