So for almost as long as I can remember the OEM grips on my Speed Triple RS have felt tacky. Further down the line they started deteriorating a bit and becoming gummy...now they're at the point where my gloves are almost glued to the bars and I'm left with grip residue on my gloves after every ride. Anyone else have an issue with this? It's recently become really annoying and I thought to myself, NBD, i'll just order the Renthal grips that I have on my other bike because they feel amazing...Wrong. That will not be the case since the entire throttle tube needs to be replace with the grip (learned that after trying to cut the old one off). Was getting ready to order new OEM but figured I'd ask if any of ya'll have experienced this or if ya'll had any recommendations on replacements. It's a 2019 with about 6,500 miles Gooey grip visual
Weird. My grips are like new, the bike has just over 10,000 km’s. Is your bike kept inside or out? Does it spend long periods of time exposed to the elements? There must be something going on in order for it to be deteriorating like that, or maybe it could just be a bad run of grips
Can't rule anything out but I don't recall doing anything different from my other bike. Thought tree sap but I don't keep it under any trees; will go a couple days in the sun before covering but that's the case for both my bikes. It definitely got worse over time and the reason I bought replacement grips was due to trying out a new pair of casual leather gloves (not sport) and they stick really bad. Admittedly I don't wash the bike very often and when I do I use dish soap or no soap (wet & wipe) followed by quick detailer spray. Sounding like the issue may be unique to me I can say this, do not attempt to cut your grips off. You need to replace the entire throttle tube if you want to replace the grip.
Nah, they're glued all the way around, no easy way of ridding the tube of the old grip. I made two cuts down through the grip with a razor blade and it was the same song on either side...So now I have two big ol cuts in my grips until the dealer can get replacements in.
If the grips are glued to the throttle tube how do they get changed say for heated grips ? I had the dealer put heated grips on my 2020 Speed Triple RS and he gave me the non heated ones to keep .
nope, just the grip bit. similar to when I changed the grips on my TTR to heated ones. Instructions are on the Triumph website. photo of grips returned to me attached---hopefully
I prefer grips from a dirt bike line. They tend to be tacky, not gummy or sticky,if you can differentiate between all those adjectives. You may need to invest in a new pair of gloves as well. Just food for thought!
Hi OhCrumON, I was going to offer to send you the grips that came off my Speedy until I saw where you lived. Hope you get this resolved.
I've replaced a lot of OEM grips with heated ones and the OEM grips have always been glued on to the bar and throttle tube. And when I've fitted the heated grips I've always had to glue them to the bar and throttle tube. So I would be surprised if your grips *weren't* glued on. I would suggest: Pull / Peel / Persuade / Cut the old ones off, clean up the bar and throttle tube and bang some new ones on. Dave
They will come off the tube, it's just a bear to get them off. Mine on the scrambler were the same, they were attached to the tube in such a way that I thought I'd never get em off. After about 1-2 hours of fiddling with a long narrow knife, cut peel, roll, cut, peel roll... not only did I get them off, I actually got them off in one piece (although chewed up on the inside a bit). It is rough looking now, but could be refitted and glued back on if I were determined to do so. After I got them off, I had to file and sand the nubs off of the tube in order to get my oxford heated grips fitted. I am just posting to say it can be done. It's not easy, it won't go fast, and if you have arthritis you'll be in a lot of pain during the process; but it can be done if you have the will. Honestly, if i weren't devoted to the idea of preserving mine, and had been willing to just cut them off roughly; it would have gone much faster/easier.
