Hello, Last weekend I planned a nice ride with some friends but I only got 9 miles away from home. Suddenly my dashboard was gone, no spark whatsoever. When I came home I removed the seat I saw that the battery was seriously damaged. Cracked on both sides and leaking. Luckily no damaged cables or anything. i replaced the battery with a newer gelversion and wanted to measure if evertything is ok (i'm an electrical noob). The voltage of the battery was 14 V (it's brandnew and fully charged). When starting it dropped to 12 and when iddling it's ok again but when revving it goes up to 15-16V! So I think the rectifier is the problem? I know what these should look like but I can't find it on my bike . Where should it be located? Should I check anything further after renewal
Cant help with the location i'm afraid but it should look like this and yes it does sound like the reg/rec as if battery is fully charged it should be charging at less than that 14.4v max and normally very variable due to loadings...
Thanks for your replies. I hope someone has a pic if the location because I couldn't find it. perhaps there is an aftermarket rectifier installed at a different location. Sounds so stupig. knowing what to look for but can't find it. I will remove the fueltank to see if it's muffeled under there
It's a '97 model. Do you have any idea where I can find a new one or is OEM the only way to go? If I look online there are only conventional ones offered like the picture above. Is there also a how-to for this job that you know about?
Interesting! Googled 97 Triumph T509 regulator/rectifier and came up with this pic....looks almost car type.
I think our resident experts @Duckadiledundee and @Smilinjack can point you in the right direction as they’ve just recently fixed Duck’s bike successfully. I wouldn’t go for a new one as they’re about £350, but Duck got a S/h one with warranty for a good price. I’m sure one of the ‘sperts can sort you out
Thank you all for your help. Now I understand why I couldn't find the rectifier I wil look for one on ebay etc and replace it. The Nick Vire vids are indeed helpful. As soon as I find a part I will update. Thanks!
And so the saga continous... With your help and youtube I replaced the alternator (part 1 in the drawing) with a tested secondhand one. Also replaced the colandt ofcourse. Which had a better colour that in Nicks vids But at the end it didn't work. I still get 15-16V at the battery. i'm a bit out of ideas actually Did I swap the wrong part of could I have checked something else?
What voltage are you getting on your battery with it disconnected? Did you change the whole alternator?
I will check this evening for the voltage when disconnected. What I measured so far (my measuring device only does whole volts): 14V at the battery (new gel-type battery fully charged with Optimate) 13V when starting 15-16 volts iddling and slightly revving (approx 2000 rpm)
I think it might be worth you investing in a more accurate multimeter mate. You can get a half decent one for £25 and it’ll give you the confidence that you’re getting accurate readings, as from what you’re telling us I’d say the new alternator you’ve got is faulty. You should only be getting about 14.5Vdc maximum with the bike running. Anything more and it’ll fry your battery again in short order.
You were all right. It was the meter that was faulty. A more accurate meter showed a 14-14,5V max. On top of that no leakages in the cooling system (knock on wood) so the Triple is up and running again Thank you all for your help!
Maybe so. It has cost me 50,- and some coolant so not to much financial damage. Im just happy that it runs again
