Well as in the title. Having only picked up the bike this week from a private seller I decided before we started to get a few miles in I should check it over. I was concerned with the amount of clank on initial first gear selection so this was first point of inspection. Luckily having a center stand it was easy to check. Findings were 25mm chain float. Far too tight. Book reads 35/40mm easy reset and give it a try. Amazing difference. Still a very slight clank as they all do but not that big snatch clank job 1 done. I also noticed a few drops of liquid next to and sitting in the throttle and mirror holding. I had wiped these away but they had come back. The owner informed me he had changed the brake fluid. Well he had, but the res was overfilled and the top plate was not fully screwed home job 2 done. Centre stand in the raised position was hitting the exhaust, well it would if the blot and rubber stop were not adjusted first job 3 done. When riding over a bumps there was a clean knocking from under the tank. On checking 2 plug and sockets were hitting the underside of tank. They just needed tidying up and cables securing in there clips. Other than those few jobs everything else is as it should be on a bike with 1300 miles on the clock. I will post a list of mods made on the bike which satisfy my needs. Ride safe all Ken
Not 100% sure but I think the centre stand is an aftermarket item on your bike The chain adjustment might need to be measured with the bike on the side stand Like I said not 100% sure
Hi DGF, I agree. Normally whether the bike has a centre stand or not, the chain tension should be checked side stand. This is so that the bike is sitting on both wheels so that the swing arm is in the correct position. If adjusted on the centre stand, when the bike is back on both wheels with a rider on board, the chain tension will have increased significantly. And for anyone interested, this effect comes about because because the pivot point of the chain is the front sprocket, whereas the pivot point of the swinging arm is rearward several inches.
I am sure the centre stand is an aftermarket addition for both the America and Speedmaster as I have just had to acquire on for mine.
I keep meaning to do both side stand and centre stand carefully over several sections of chain. Then compare the averages and make a correction factor for center stand if necessary. If there is only a few mm in it then hardly worth worrying, it isn't like measuring is easy to be very consistent.
Just doing it right now as we chat for info. Side stand 35mm Centre stand 40mm both within tolerance.
