Damn and blast despite my Trident 900 having been on a regular trickle charger the sprag has just gone. The bike is a 92 plate with 49k on the clock. Does anyone have a rough cost for replacement/labour?
Had my '95 done by a local dealer.here in the U.S.. It is a grey motor, 6 speed. It does not have the removable plate. It was expensive but I was not about to tackle that myself. They had to pull it completely apart. I had them do a complete engine re-seal and rebuild it's carbs. ...J.D. HERE IS A PICTURE OF THAT MOTOR:
If your Trident doesn't have the top access plate (and not all grey finish engines did, only the earliest) then it IS an engine out job, I'm afraid. My advice would be to contact Clive WOOD and be prepared to wait ... he's busy with a capital "B", because he's good with a capital "F"! Location: Swineshead, Lincolnshire Tel: 07752 477738 Email: [email protected] Facebook: Clive Wood or Clive Wood Triumph Google: Clive Wood Triumph (for recommendations) He may not necessarily be the cheapest and you might have a considerable lead time but you'll KNOW it's done properly, thoroughly and quickly. My 10 penn'orth.
Some engines can be black and have a cover over the sprag. Not as simple as you think. Cross over was 94 model year.
My first Trophy 900 was a 93 April one and the first sprag replacement needed a bit of machining of the casing to give clearance for the new unit as it was slightly bigger on the O/D I stuffed the top of the gearbox with paper towel and went at it with a Dremel grinder. The hardest part was getting the splined sleeve back through the clutch centre and into the gear behind it. An alternator drive lock tool can be made with a couple of pieces of bent steel bar. Something else I did was to make a clutch drum holding tool by fixing pair of clutch plates together (inner and outer) with six self tapping screws ( remember to file off the burrs before refitting) No problems with the clutch plates from this bodge after many thousand miles. If you have the removeable top plate engine just take your time and all will be well. Good luck.
Is that the Steve Lovatt that i met on a couple of DGR's ? I was on the green Kawasaki Nomad, with a union jack on the back. Anyway my 93 900 Trident has a black engine, and that removable plate.
