Hello, new to this forum. I saw this 1972 Bonneville T120 in Facebook. Can I get some feedback on whether this might be a good motorcycle to purchase as an experienced rider, but new to Triumph? I like to do my own maintenance. I would like to know what is not original or right on this bike. Some things seem off. No bellows on the forks. Incorrect horn. I'm not an expert. Hard to tell much from pictures but looks pretty original to me. These usually aren't as sought after as the 1970 and older bikes.
This is an Oil In Frame (OIF) Triumph. Instead of an oil tank, the main vertical part of the frame holds the oil in a "dry" sump system. They are not as valued as prior Triumphs, but have many devotees. The front forks are Ceriani-like and do not have the traditional bellows but are considered an improvement in handling. The ride height is several inches higher than previous Bonnies, so if you are 5'10" or under, plan on not being able to keep both feet on the ground. The bike pictured seems to be mostly original and in decent shape. The price is about right for the bike. Go for it.
Thanks for your helpful reply. I am 5' 11" so this might work. I will have to research a little more, the oiling system seems quite different.
Hey Tom. If I were you I would get the cash from the automated teller on the way down there - and do it now! Heck, he's even open to offers - what are you waiting for? That machine wouldn't normally have fork gaiters/bellows; the horn looks original to me but difficult to tell. The original Lucas chrome indicators (turn signals) are missing but the wiring's there so some repro's or a chance find of some originals might sort that. The silencers (mufflers) aren't original or correct period but, again, I think repro's are now available. Mileage is less than 10k and it's in Phoenix. All adds up to a good deal - in my view If you don't want it, tell him I'm interested! Can he get it to Shingle Spirings, Ca.? Seriously, that looks like a good bike and a good buy if you're in any way interested in a 70's Triumph. Go for it. Now. Edit.
