Featured Did A Good Thing Today, Very Pleased With Myself.

This poor chap flew into my window today with a real thud. Found him lying motionless on the lawn with the magpies massing in the tree ready to finish him off. Got him in the house quick and wrapped him in a warm towel. Took him to the dark shed and let him rest for a few hours without any disturbance. Checked in a few hours later and he/she is stood up looking around, left the door open and after a few more minutes flew off of his own accord so the shock hadn't killed him and all limbs and both wings fully working.
He didn't say thanks but makes you feel good that it's still around thanks to the things I did and some good luck. Me a happy bunny, the next bunny it catches for it's tea not so happy.
Anyone know what type of hawk it is?

 

Good job you were there, I was outside digs for work one evening smoking when I saw a pigeon fly into a window, it was stunned and straight away a magpie attacked it by trying to peck its eyes out

 

I’m no expert but I think it might be a sparrow hawk
Definitely a lucky hawk

 

Little bird of prey we thought Sparrowhawk, did the same where I work we did what you did, kept it warm put it in a dark room, although that time, it died, so Im chuffed yours made it ,well done sir.

 

Magpies were not happy, they stayed in the tree giving full squawk for quite a while. Shame it wasn't a maggie hawk rather than a sparrow hawk.

 

It’s a female sparrowhawk, no question. I had one I three times rescued from my garage attic where is was predating nesting swallows.

 

My wife saves me some chicken. Does THAT count ? I LIKE chicken ...J.D.

Indeed, well done I like birds of pray they are a good sign of the health of nature in general if there are plenty of them there is plenty for them to eat

Keep your eyes open though as Dilli has bother with Magpies bullying him and ganging up, something to do with being superior

 

Wow! well done farky, you've done a wonderful thing, saving a life. I once on a ride out, came across a new born sparrow sitting in the middle of the road. I stopped and put it in the hedge were it would be safe and it's mother could find it. A few miles down the road was another baby sparrow sitting in the middle of the road. Once again I stopped, only to find it was a pine cone. I had to laugh

 

Nice one, glad it recovered. I love birds of prey they are so graceful and mean at the same time.
I did a bird of prey day up nr Annan and got to fly vultures, Eagle Owls, Harris Hawks etc etc. a really great day

Excellent, well done. I reckon it's a Kestrel, not a sparrowhawk though.

 

I thought Kestrel too but the behaviour described suggests Sparrowhawk. Google images are inconclusive compared with the top pic. Kestrels hover looking for food, Sparrowhawks fly fast and low, I see them regularly in our garden. Either way, a good deed, well done.

 

Good to see it recovered ok, well done. I agree with Callumity, it looks like a female sparrowhawk, if it were a kestrel then it would have a light whiteish area behind the eyes.

Thanks for all the comments and positive vibes, if it helps with identification, it had very light coloured feathers on its belly and yellow legs and I live in an urban area but on the edge of a wooded river valley. Not sure if this is best habitat for either bird but may help rule out one or the other?

 

You would be classed as prey. Duck.
