Have you seen (Everybody must have by now) the video on Sky News showing the biker collide head on (70mph) with a car that was on the wrong side of the road! He was wearing a full air suit which sure helped him. Ken.
That’s the one. Am I seeing it wrong, or is the bike up on the front wheel under braking before impact? Ken. PS. As a matter of interest, how does this guy’s sentence compare with the bikers who recently videoed themselves riding dangerously, wheelies etc?
I’ve watched it a few times now and it appears to swing from the right hand side into view then back again I still think it’s in the car
It first appears here for a split second Bottom right hand corner I think it’s inside the car Air freshener/phone holder/sat nav or something
This is a longer explanation as to how he survived - he applied the brakes hard and possibly avoided the car when the bike hit: https://motorbikewriter.com/airbag-suit-lifesaver-head/ Beerman
I presume the Suzuki didn't have ABS on. If it did have ABS the rear wouldn't have risen and his injuries from the tank and handlebars would have been significantly worse
As we know ABS prevents the brake from locking. Had the tyre lost grip under the severe braking he employed then the ABS would have cut in and may have prevented the rear from coming up but as it was there was sufficient grip between the front tyre and the road for him to perform a high speed stoppie, and the system didn’t have enough time to react to the different wheel speeds with the rear in the air. This was all over in a couple of seconds and we can’t see clearly how long he had the brakes on in order to lift the front. I agree his elevated position helped tremendously in reducing the severity of his injuries. He essentially kept going at the speed he was travelling at on impact whereas the bike was subjected to massive force reversing its forward momentum and sending it backwards at 40mph. That kind of shift in momentum is not survivable in a car with all its airbags let alone a bike. I doubt there was enough left of the bike to reconstruct it and test the ABS was working correctly, but I don’t think ABS was a factor in this case.
I bought a cordura coat with airbag liner inflated with a gas canister about ten years back from m&p on a sale day, £10, no one wanted them then,I still have it but took the liner out and don't have that anymore so it is just a jacket which I don't wear. I'll add a pic later if I remember....if anyone cares, probably pointless much like the jacket
It was a cheap jacket, though I am sorry I don't still have the liner, if only to sell it on one day as an example of the early type of these inflatable bike jackets
