very different things Sandi T - Butties are generally a Northern delicacy whereby a meal (chips, bacon etc) are placed BETWEEN two (or more) pieces of bread. Whereas a Sarni is eaten nationally and is formed by having a filling (cheese and pickle for example) one top of one slice of bread with a second ‘topping or cover’ slice placed above the filling - this crafting a breaded sandwich of around a central filling. Other localisations occur such as cutting the butty/sarni this can be corner you corner (posh) or across the middle (not so posh). There are a variety of bread product options from Lidl Value thin sliced cardboard to artisan baker speciality breads. Butter is an option on a sarni but I believe compulsory on a butty. Fillings can be savoury or sweet and indeed along isles of our supermarkets there are jams (spreadable sugary confections made usually of fruit), spreads (tuna or pate pastes), through to fillings like chicken/ham, cheeses and coleslaw, salad cream, mayonnaise etc. indeed it would take a lifetime to comprehend the Idiosyncratic nuances of sandwiches (and butties) but even an American (with effort) should be able to prepare a basic model sarni with just a few (a dozen or so) introductory training courses (wearing the necessary safety equipment).
While round my neck of the woods we have muffins(a round risen bread about one inch thick), an oven bottom muffin (much thinner), a teacake (softer than a muffin), all are about six inches in diameter. We also have current teacakes which are toasted and buttered when still hot. Muffins are not to be confused with sweet cakes which we call BUNS and MUFFIN is nothing sexual at all.

Bread cakes! Don't forget bread cakes. Just the same as bread buns etc. Only the name has been changed to protect the innocent. Bread can be used, as has already been stated herein, to soak up alcohol in the body (aided and abetted by fried products - bacon, sausage, chips etc), so no thread derailment here! But don't dunk it in your beer. It's not like it's a biscuit being introduced to a mug of tea or coffee. No Siree!! Totally different concept! Ooh!! I mentioned CAKES again.

Hi mate, I'm guessing you're talking about Croûtons saveur Ail. Garlic flavoured croutons, just finished a packet !!! Get them from Aldi in a strip of 4 packs, cost about 1.20€ per strip. Cheers Dave

Wow, do you all have so many different names for the same things for other stuff, too?? I loved the article. And from the looks of it your wife is definitely in the "cob" minority at 8%. Here in the U.S. a "cob" is a cob of corn--that part of the ear of corn which holds the kernels. At any rate, whatever you call it the roll/cob/bun/etc., it seems that the the primary purpose is to be a bacon and sauce delivery device. Thanks for the lesson. We have lots of sandwiches in the U.S. but it doesn't seem like there are so many ingredients, combinations, names, and nuances. But then, I guess when it rains so much one must do something to occupy oneself and pass the time. Sandwich inventions! Brilliant.
