I blacked some bits on my scrambler. Fenders, skid plate, headlight bezel, air filter covers, and some other trim all got a heavy coating of black plastidip with several coats of dry spray to make them slightly textured and matte. I think it came out nice, but can peal it right off if I change my mind. It just had too much brushed aluminum in stock form for my tastes. I also coated the tank in clear with a final dry spray mostly to protect it from scratches. Gave the whole tank an even matte finish. I was heavy handed and some spots came out hazy so it doesn't look great, but I'll peel it off in the spring and redo it. Some before and after pics for anyone who wants to see what a scrambler 1200 looks like with less aluminum showing.
It looks great, nice job ...but I must admit it sends a shiver down my spine whenever I hear "plastidip", and I'm not sure why as I have no experience of it
I was skeptical of using plastidip like spray paint, but I have experience using it to waterproof electronics and know it peels right off so I figured if it didn't work out there'd be no harm. If it wasn't for the fact that it peels right off, I never would have done it. No way would I have risked painting my scrambler with anything permanent. I was pleasantly surprised by how well it works and the variety of finishes you can get just by altering your spraying technique. I wouldn't hesitate to try it out on any job where I want something I can undo easily. I botched the job on several pieces and had to peel it off and start over. If you have a nice thick coating it peels right off in a sheet. If the spray is thin it is terrible to remove because it comes off in tiny pieces and can be hard to get out of tight spots. If I need to peel anything that is too thin, I just lay a big thick fresh coat over it, let it dry, then peel it.
Looks good, but my experience is that in the busy areas, where you occasionally catch it with your foot or leg, the plasti dip does not last. I did similar parts as you and ended up removing it after few weeks as it started to show.
I did the same with the headlight grill and the fog lights protector. I am happy with the result and curious about how long is it going ro last. I agree that having the option to peel it off gave me a peace of mind
Yes, I agree. I will have a long trip rhis month and decided to protect the headlight, but the downside is the access to clean it. Let's see how it goes...
Cheap Kemimoto ones from amazon https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B072BQJ63D/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 But honestly, I love the look, they are very solid and dont move around on me, and they are slightly blue tinted which helps with glare, and they are slightly concave so you still get a good field of view in the small mirror. I couldn't be happier with them for $35. Heck I would have been happy with them if I'd have paid $50.
