Had test rides on a couple of BMWs today a GS1250 Rallye and a 1250xr courtesy of John Clark BMW Dundee (really helpful guys) if only all bike dealers were as helpful

after spending a couple of weeks touring the Canadian Rockies on a GS1200 a few years ago, I wanted to try the new 1250 version just to compare it. so i took the bikes out for long test rides, the new bike only has 50cc more but it seemed to have a lot more grunt than I remember the 1200 having,(the 1200 was no slouch though) and it was really easy to get into highly illegal speeds, the handling was just as I remember it..very good. I think they must have changed the screen on the new bike as I was getting a lot of wind noise, adjusting the screen didn't make much difference, I was told there is an aftermarket part to attach to the screen which sorts this out, although if your not tall the standard screen would be fine, the quick shifter wasn't great, although the salesman said it would get better after some more miles on it (it only had 200 miles on the clock) I couldn't find any other faults everything else about the bike was brilliant.

The XR was also a great bike but lacked the character of the twin, this bike had 2000k on it and the quickshifter was flawless

Great report and photos, Dougie! I have a friend who has a GS (2016 maybe?) that he's about to trade for the new 1250. He rarely if ever rides it off road these days but just really likes the bike. I'll fill him in on your observations and comments.

I think the XR has the same engine as the S1000R, yes? I test rode that bike when I was looking a year ago but wound up with my Speed Triple. I wasn't a fan of the BMW's inline four engine character. Love my Speedy's triple and the character of that engine sold me when I chose between the two.

I have found that my Speedy's quick shifter works better now at 2700 miles than when I first bought it.

yes I had a test ride of the S1000r before I bought my Speed Triple, the S1000r performed brilliantly, but I just found it too bland

I test rode an XR recently too. Quite an impressive bike, fast, comfy, very capable and lots of gadgets but I honestly found it a bit soulless and boring (if you can call a 160bhp bike boring :p)
I’m hopefully going to try out the new R1250RS soon, which should be good. That ShiftCam engine is supposed to be a peach. :grinning:

Please let us know what you think of the R1250RS, freck. I've read great reviews in mags and online but never know whether there's bias in those. Well, I guess we're all biased in one way or another but you know what I mean. :joy:

You're right, freck. We've had our summertime monsoons and now probably won't get a drop of rain until January. Hope you get some dry(er) weather and sunny blue skies!!:sun::)

Great photos, SleepyOwl! I like the idea of off roading but NOT the reality. I always felt the same way about mountain biking too. I'd get all excited to go out on the trails when I bought a mountain bike. Then I'd get out there and think (well, yeah say it out loud quite frequently), "I HATE THIS! Sold the mountain bike quite quickly. :joy::joy::joy:
