  1. I checked my oil level before setting off on a reasonably long journey yesterday, and needed nearly half a litre to get it back to the correct level. I've since done 336 miles, all in one hit, mostly at 75/85 mph and had to add another half a litre...
Is this normal for this motor ? it's a 2011 model with 21k on the clock...

I was going to post a new thread with the same question!

Tigger is a 2016 800 XRx (Low). Even as a young cub it drank oil faster than I expected and nearly once ran dry! Does anyone know if the oil light comes on for low oil levels or is it to say the pump is knackered (or something). I can now tell when the oil is low as the engine makes more noise. Keep the oil at the top Mark in the window and it’s v quiet and smooth.

I am going to try some Shell Ultra 10/40 oil as the Castrol 1 is apparently also a noisy oil and isn’t as good as Shell with the clutch...

To answer your question, Tigger has done 23k miles and uses a more oil than I’d have expected, but not as much as you described from your experiences.

    Hope that helps...

I was led to believe that early Daytona 675's were known for drinking oil, maybe read up on them and see what the cause and remedies were?

I personally would class 1.5 litres per 1000 miles as excessive and would be contacting the factory for support.

Were both these bikes run in by someone else other than the current owners?
If run in too GENTLY then glazed bores could be your issue!

The old method ..... use with caution!

Remove spark plugs and drop some brake fluid down the bores. Fire it up in an OPEN area and blow the smoke out of it o_O

The best, safest and most appropriate method is to re-hone the bores and then NOT run it in too gently or slug it in high gears.
REVS are not always a bad thing and glazed bores and gummed rings don't happen on a thrashed motor :p

  6. Thanks for the replies gents, i'd forgotten i'd posted this thread !
It wasn't me that ran the bike in, i've only had it a few months now, so i have no idea how gentle it was run in..
I've done a few more miles now since the original post, and i've now sussed i need to keep an eye on the oil level - like every week. It doesn't smoke, or appear to have any engine issues, it runs like a dream, i just suppose it's one of those motors that does use a bit. It's not a big issue for me, as long as i keep an eye on it, like @Cyborgbot said, it's lovely and quiet when the level is correct, but you can tell when it needs topping up.
I wasn't aware of the Shell oil being any quieter, i'm currently running it on fully synthetic Putoline..
    Any more info/advice greatly appreciated

I just saw some posts saying Castrol 1 is good but makes it noisy. I have some shell ultra on order and will do the 24k service soon and replace the oil. I’ll let u know if it makes a difference.

Iv'e had 4 tiger 800's,3 of them were brand new,run them in for the full 1000mls not thrash it at 600mls after its service, none of them ever drank a drop.

Putoline is absolutely shite,i had a kawasaki always had the same oil in then 1 day the putoline rep came round, they put that shite in my bike the next service and i was missing gears and it was jumping out of gear i took it back and told them to take it out[free of charge]put my regular stuff in and it was back to normal. You shouldn't be running it on fully synthetic, bikes with a few miles on [over 10,000]run much better on semi synthetic,i would put silkolene semi in it,putoline is as thin as piss anyway let alone fully synthetic.
