So after a successful, no issue 1500 mile tour, I tried to start the bike today only to be unexpectedly disappointed. The bike cranks but doesn't start - it just carries on spinning over without a hint that it will fire. Obviously kill switch is off, the needle does it's sweep and all the usual warning lights come on and I can hear the fuel pump priming. Charged up the battery and tried again 2 hours later but exactly the same. Spins away but bugger all happens. Any ideas?
Steve Lovatt. You may have flooded the plugs. Perhaps take them out dry them of check for spark and go again. Also do check all the fuses. Regards Joe.
Found this;- 1/ One easy way to tell if it's the stepper, just crack the throttle open while you crank the bike. Give it some gas and if it fires and you can keep it running by working the throttle, it's likely your stepper motor. 2/ Checked the stepper motor. Seems clean enough, and moving on power on and during the fax machine noise. Gave it a bit of WD40 for good measure. Managed to get it started by holding the starter whilst winding the throttle open. Somewhere around 1/2 throttle it fired and caught. Since then it fires up straight away without any throttle. Took it for a test ride, stopped and started more than a dozen times and all seems fine.
Cheers mate but I don't think the later (post 2015) Tigers have stepper motors. I could of course be wrong!
Thinking about it now, all I did was wash it. Ungrateful b*stard! Won't be doing that again - be warned lads!
Blimey Steve that’s bad news. Could be water ingress somewhere, have a look in the clutch and side stand switch assembly, maybe do the paper clip jobbie
Running again now! Not really sure why it wouldn't start or why it now does. Bloke on the Tiger Facebook page said his 2015 XC did it once and he just kept cranking until it fired up, has never had the problem since. Basically just tried that whilst opening the throttle a tad and it fired up and then instantly stalled. Did the same again and it caught first time and stayed running. Just got back from a quick "in between the showers" run and all seems fine. Thanks again for all the input (including the paper clips)
