Hi My speed triple has difficulty changing gears when the engine has been running for 20min when the engine is hot. To change gear i some times i have to give the accelerator a quick blast and it changes as it should. Martin.
Welcome to the forum @Martin Nunn Nice new clean oil and filter is a good place to start. Even if it looks clean on the stick, you be surprised how skanky it might be when you drop it.
As has been said, check clutch free play. Slight clutch drag will give selection problems. The handbook explains all.
Cheers for the reply much appreciated not been riding long so all the help i can get will help. Cheers.
I would say clutch plates the bloody triumphs are known for it. Just had to,put a new clutch in my 2011 with only 4800 miles. Had trouble changing gear as well. As long as you have 1 or 2mm play at the end of your leave the adjustment will be right. I would say 95% clutch plates
Make sure chain isn't too tight as that can cause issues with gear selection Oil, if old causes build up of crap inside engines Clutch cable adjust ment so 2-3mm free play at the lever Clutch plates can get stuck to each other, okay when cold but sticky when they get hot, may need a strip down of the clutch, clean the plates and resemble with a new gasket As an after thought and not meaning to scare you, but difficult gear change can be a symptom of bent gear selector forks which is caused when engine is put in gear and the spindle nuts or sprockets are beingloosened or tightened, Always have the bike in neutral and use the rear brake to undo nuts on the spindle or sprocket nuts
Cheers for the reply much appreciated not been riding long so all the help i can get will help. Cheers. Many thanks for your reply much appreciated.
Thanks for the reply. I have noticed the chain needs to be adjusted as it seems very slack, it is more than 20mm to 30mm would this also affect gear change ?
Just remember on forums you will get lots and lots of options lots can be very helpful but lots can be just wrong. But if you really do not know much about maintaining a bike best get it down a shop or you could do more harm than good. Or find a friend that knows about bikes. I do most of my own repairs ie fitting clutches fork oil and seal and all your standard maintenance. Have a mate that does gearbox repairs another that builds off road bike engines, so between us we can get most things sorted. And you never stop learning. But basic maintenance is a must. Am sure you will meet local bikers that are happy to help teach you the basics. If not YouTube can help. Delboy garage on you tube can be helpful to beginners. He is a good lad.
A couple of years back "Lola" started crawling forward at traffic lights, even with the clutch pulled all the way in. I gave her an oil change and it went away. Might it be your clutch plates are sticking together ? ...J.D.
Hi and welcome. My gear selection (2005 speed triple) was a bit rough. Change of oil and filter and adjusting free play sorted that.
if you go to youtube and put in speed triple chain adjustment i am sure someone will have done a clip of it being done that should help you do it if you have the tools. adjuster tool will be under your seat.
