Evenin' all. Changed the back brake pads on my speedy. (not the first time) All good, but, they no longer spring away from the disc that little bit. Still ridable but the disc is extremely hot. Any ideas? Thanks in advance. Rob
HI Rob did you give the calipers a good cleaning, with brake cleaner. especially the locator pins, try giving them a good rubbing with some sand paper. This is basic so Im sure someone will come in with some proper advice
I thought I'd already posted on this thread, but my post appears to have disappeared??? Sounds like the pistons within the calliper are not operating freely. Strip down the calliper and give them a really good clean. You can use brake clean but I tend to use hot, soapy water and a toothbrush. Have a look here :
Sooooo, All clean and shiney, Locktight and all... Problem solved. Thanks gents. Great video Dave, sometimes I forget "prior planning and" etc. Safe riding.
I'm pleased that you got it sorted Rob. Now go out for a ride in the sunshine - it's bloody hot here !!!
how old is the brake fluid , the reason I ask is because I had an issue with my rear brake sticking a little while ago , it kept doing it intermittently , I stripped the caliper (twice) , cleaning the pots etc , making sure everything was spot on , but it kept doing it . I noticed that the rear master cylinder was getting very warm as it is mounted very close to the engine casing & discovered that the brake seemed to be sticking more when the engine was at working temperature. I wasn't sure how old the fluid was as I had not changed it since owning the bike & there seemed to be no mention of it in the service history. After draining the old fluid & putting new fluid in it appears to have completely cured the problem. My theory is that the fluid gets hot in the master cylinder from the engine heat & if the fluid is old it is expanding because of its low viscosity & bringing the rear brake on. In the manual it does say change every two years & I think it definitely needs to be changed regularly otherwise this problem is going to occur.
The brake fluid is less than a year old. As I wrote early, everything is working fine now but thanks for the heads up on that. It's another thing that can be checked should a similar problem arise in the future.
no worries , the reason I mentioned it was because I thought I'd solved it twice but the problem kept coming back - particularly in hot weather
My rear brake disc felt a bit hot the other day so I'm going to check the fluid and probably replace, thanks for the tip Daryl.
