    Drill a hole, then use a screwdriver as a drift to force it off !!!:p

    Or angle grinder ???

    Haha, that's allus an option, but I'd ideally like to get it off undamaged, cos they're not cheap, and they tidy the area up nicely. The previous owner put it on.

    One possibility is it twists on, with an expanding part inside
    I am sure you have tried but a good counter clockwise twist?

    turn the outer anti-clockwise which should slacken it, then just prise out with a couple of screwdrivers
