No, I didn't kick my girlfriend out of the house and am starting anew. What I did when I first got this bike ('97 T509 885cc) was threw it together to make sure it ran and everything worked. Now I'm going back to tie up loose ends, one of them being a leaking valve cover gasket. While in there I found a loose camshaft cap bolt! The torque is listed as 10nm (88.5 in.lbs). I tightened the one to 90 in.lbs. and checked the others, which didn't move. Are these bolts known to come loose? Should I up the torque on these cap bolts to say 95 in.lbs? Has anybody else run into this? Thanks!
I would always use the stated torque for something like a cam cap bolt. Too tight and you could cause problems with oil starvation to the bearing face. The cam cap bolts on my Daytona were all done up to the correct torque but when I came back to them some time later they were hard to remove. Certainly no problems with them coming loose.
Yes, I agree. Thought maybe the torque specs had been revised as I've seen elsewhere. The former owner said he was going to put hotter cams in it and may have cracked this one loose before putting the project on hold. One of those things you just don't know about when buying a used bike. Am sure glad I thought to check them!! Hope things are going good for you Freck!
Over torquing bolts/nuts by a small amount wont hurt.....but it wont always stop them coming loose if its causes by vibration/harmonics tighter isn't always better as said with light alloy castings you also run the risk of distortion.
Well, just put the lid on it, got the gas tank on and charging the battery. Wait till tomorrow to fire it up so the RTV can dry. This bike has 8600 miles on it so the cams look good and top of the head is clean.
Tiger XCA - See some mentions of Torque Specs in this discussion. I am looking for the Torque specs (nM) for common maintenance items. Like front and rear brake caliper bolts, front axle, rear lug nuts, brake pad pin, etc... I have poked around on line but nothing. Resorted, for now, calling my dealer service for specs on changing out the rubber. Front Caliper mounting bolts -- 50 nM Rear Caliper mounting bolts -- 40 nM Front Axle -- 65 nM Rear Wheel Lug nuts - 70 nM Front Brake pad pin -- ?? nM -- When I have to change the pads Rear Brake pad pin -- ?? nM Oil plug -- ?? nM ....
