Hi people, my name is Nick and I have just sold my old Cagiva Navigator to join the Triumph ranks by purchasing a 2014 Tiger 1050 sport with 13k kms on the clock.
I'm delighted with the power plant but got I bit of a fright tonight when checking the oil level albeit by the incorrect method by not running the motor first. No oil appeared on the dip stick hence I added about a litre. I gather now I have probably over filled and will need to check tomorrow. My Suzuki powered Cagiva used no oil from change to change.
I hope this forum will in future answer many questions.
    Cheers
    Nick

Welcome Nick. Jap bikes are great for that, even my new BMW uses a bit of oil but the missus's VFR doesn't use a drop.

    Thanks Frek
Does not running the engine prior to checking the oil level make a significant difference to the level?
    Cheers

It will make a little difference but its best to check the owners manual.
Some manufacturers say check when cold, some say 5 minutes after a ride.

You want to make sure you've not filled it too much before you ride it again, too much oil can damage an engine almost as much as not enough.

I’ve always found it a bit odd that some bike, and car manufacturers say start the engine to check the oil level, what if there’s none in there? Quickest way to spin a main bearing ever!
Welcome along, hope you get your oil level correct and enjoy the bike.

Thank you everyone for the warm welcome. It's autumn here now and a great time for biking through the hinterland.
I hope Tigger lives up to my expectations. I've wanted one for years.
    Cheers everyone.

Thanks, I had a good look this morning. Had to draw off about 200 mls of oil. Very fiddly, I either need to get a paddock or centre stand.
The centre stands are quite exy here.
