Awright - I'm out for a ride on my '97 T509 885. I pull in for gas and find the neutral light is non-functional.
Still goes into neutral and starts so I head home.

I can tell the bike likes me cause she gets me home and then dies at my doorstep. She gave it her best to get me home but won't start.

This morning I give her the key, neutral light comes on and she fires right up!

Why do women have to be so complicated? I would cane her but I don't think that works on bikes - what could be the problem??

I am no expert but sounds like a bad earth/loose connection, someone will be along shortly with a much better & more helpful answer, until then I would cane her! o_O

The problem with caning a bike is you can't very well hide the welts - and they don't heal up!

Back in the day I had a '99 955i Sprint, had a problem with wiring around the headstock area (not uncommon fault for Triumphs around those years), a broken wire meant ignition circuits stayed live and a flat battery soon followed. Different symptoms to yours but always worth a check in that area - does the loom go tight on full lock, if so increases likelihood.
.....But hopefully as Bad Billy suggests just a bad earth or connector - just clean and re-grease, broken wires are a sod to trace.

There's seems to be adequate clearance for the wires. I have pulled and wiggled the harnesses and the lights didn't blink at all..

I am not familiar with the lockout mechanism on your model but you know the bulb isn’t blown. That narrows it down to a connectivity issue on the ignition or starter circuit.
Your explanation is a bit thin. Didn’t start..... won’t spin or won’t fire? The answer narrows it to ignition or starter circuit.

It would spin like normal but no fire, and like I said - no neutral light.

Check your fuses, connectors, and earths, for a partial break ,loose ,or corroded, connection.
What fuse is your neutral light on? follow this line first. Do you have a wiring diagram, someone on here will if you need one.

Not sure about the neutral light, but the turning over without starting and cutting out, could be the fuel pump relay under the riders seat.
It's a long time since I had my T595 but I think there are 3 relays under the seat, (One being the fuel pump) and if they are still the old metal cased ones, I would change them all, as they are a known problem. I had the same issue with cutting out due to the fuel pump relay.
Is the engine fault light on now it's running again?

The neutral light wire runs down to beside the gear lever, this is probably the easiest to check.

OK, the neutral switch wire looked good....I've dug into the relays and have identified 2 of them, though the wire colors don't all match the schematic..The two on the right "appear" to be the fuel pump and ECM....Does anybody know off hand what the other two relays are? One is a Hella so am guessing it's the headlight....There's two pictures I've found in the manual which shows this bank of relays but Triumph couldn't go to the trouble to identify what they all are. They couldn't even definitively identify the Fuel and ECM.

Anyway, as suggested, I ordered 3 new Bosch relays to replace the metal top ones. They're all the same part number and got them for $15 each on eBay.

Here’s the relay details from the service manual.

Sorry, think I’ve got the wrong picture for you there. I just saw T595 in the previous post then saw you’d originally posted about a Striple

Thanks - that looks like the same lay out as my T509 885cc, although the Haynes manual says the relay locations may be different and to identify them by their wire colors. And like I said, the wire colors of the harness don't all match the colors in the schematics.

I had the same thing with the Haynes. In fact I’ve found with the Haynes for a few bikes that the wire colours are different to the bike.
I’ve got a Triumph service manual for a 99 Striple if you need to reference anything. I can scan in the pages you need
