Hi All. I had a great read on Bad Billies threads. Racing is indeed an expensive past time. I am entering my 5th year club racing in a Supertwin Class one Scotland and further afield when I can. However as much as the MiniTwin and Supertwin class are meant to be budget classes the cost has out grown my budget so much so that I am considering changing class next year. I am set on racing my 955i Speed Triple towards the end of this year and all next year. I will be entering the Sounds Of Thunder class which will pitch me up against SP1s and RSV Millie’s. As stock the S3 is no where near fast enough so will be looking at engine mods. Simple thing to do is a Daytona engine swap but that’s no fun. I have ideas/experience and will do the following Thinner head gasket. Polish and port the heads. bored throttle bodies. Air box mod with velocity stacks Suspension I am ok with I have heard that you can change the Cams for Daytona Cams Daytona Exhaust cam in the inlet side and S3 inlet cam in the Exhaust side. Do you know if this or heard of it been done? I see many posts on the Daytona ex cam going into 1050 motors but can’t see any discussions on this been done on a 955i motor.
I am looking forward to getting it done. Not seen many S3 race bikes. Even with a google search or on Pinterest
Liking the SV650. My first big bike, bloody great engines in them and you can rag them them all day long and feel like your actually getting close to their limits, unlike a 750 Gixxer (my 2nd BB). I'd have another at a drop of a hat, bloody loved mine. Good luck with the change of class.
I built The SV in the photo from a standard bike and is well specced for a Supertwin but is no where near competitive. Kent cams, racing pro velocity stacks, Falicon knife edge conrods, high compression pistons and gaskets, slipper clutch, Ohlins all round as well as Brembo all round. Most riders are on the Er6 and a few have put deposits for the New Norton.
Your SV looks well. A friend has a tuned ER6 but they are known to snap conrods if taken too far. His bike smashed itself (and his right leg) to bits when the rear shock let go.
Hes best part mended with a little limp. The top joint pulled off and when next compressed the whole world turned upside down.... broken tib and fib.
Hey mate, Good luck with the S3 project, I thought about sound of thunder when I wrote off my RC8, but I figured it was going to cost a lot more the Prostocks Bandits, the FPR rules on mods stop people buying a win with a tuned engine & fancy race suspension. I must admit that I am finding racing a lot more expensive than I thought, and that's racing in a control class at the budget end, so respect to you keeping it going for 5 years. Keep us updated with the S3 race conversion and let us know how she fairs, I would say that racing the Mille would be the easier option, but as you said, wheres the fun in that!
Its unbelievably costly but sooooooo addictive, you cant get the thrill of the starting grid anywhere else....Its the one place where i am clear of all thoughts. I love it. 5 years, dread to think of what i have spent. The Prostock Bandits is a great class. we ended up with CB500s as our budget class. The Minitwin class became lightweights up here and it grew arms and legs and is now a £25k class if you want to be competitive.... This was my first wee bike. started off at £200......
Thinking at the moment to get hold on the cam swap. I dont know if i would need the full power of a Daytona as much as I would like it. I am unlikley to get to the redline of the S3 on a short circuit. I will install, QA throttle, Daytona headers and an open under seat system, bored TBs, velocity stacks with open/modded airbox and set it up with a PC3 and Dynojet QS. i have all of the above except the bored TBs I can take the front end off my Supertwin which is k6 GSXR forks, Ktech internals and full Brembos with Brembo Monoblocs. I have a Shock Factory Shock but will see about getting better.
I would love to race a 675 Daytona as the engine is a peach, but just couldn't afford it, that said, I am constantly surprised at just how good the Bandits are, on paper they just shouldn't go round corners but they do. Our race series leader this year set a new lap record at the Brands Indy 1st round of 54.69 secs ... on a Bandit FFS! I am a big lad at 6'3" and 16 stone and a complete lack of talent, so I am never going to be pulling up trees, but enjoy the buzz of racing, wherever you are in the pack there is someone to race with, that is what is addictive!
My mate who loves his 675 ST has done loads of track days on anything from Kawasaki 600s to GSXR 750 to R1s etc. I suggested to get rid of them all and just buy another 675 if he loves it that much. He's just recently done that and now has two in the garage, one road, one track. Let's see how he gets on this year.
It is indeed just that Billy. An addiction I have been toying with the idea of SuperMoto Racing. Cheap as chips
Would you get a supermoto just purely for competing though? My mate I mentioned went down the route of a CRF 450. He took it to Aragon or Cartagena, can't remember which, and said it was a hoot on the corners but obviously useless on the straights. As a road bike it was pretty naff, great for in the Dales on tight twisties and jumps, wheelies galore but not much fun getting there.
We have a track and club quite close in Crail so there is the option to race it and use the club track for practice. Knockhill is our next track along and that again is suitable for track days on a SuperMoto but it would be road legal too. SuperMoto here is £40 for an entry. They race on a Sunday only. Be able to use it for some endurance as well over the colder months. Lots of pros and few cons
Beware of trying to do too much with one though or you will over compromise it. The idea of two sets of wheels (on and off road) doesnt really work in my opinion as tarmac wants a big front brake and off road doesn't. This all then becomes a faff changing over including gearing and other chain etc. Having done enduros in the past I quite fancy a supermoto myself but think it needs to be a 450 for tarmac. Off road I wouldn't pick such a big bike as I know i could go faster on a smaller one and being a short arse it would fit me better. If a few of your mates have them then they will be a hoot and you could do the odd commute etc. as well. Plus they are pretty crash proof if you get carried away; I know this first hand when observing a tail drift losing front grip from about 3 metres away lol. Luckily he centrifugally spun out and I cut to the centre/ inner curb. Plastics scuffed, pride took a hit and knackered gloves. Not bad for a slide off on a roundabout
A few good points there. I had not thought too much into the enduro but trying to pull a big bike out of a ditch maybe too much
Well, I thought I should resurrect and then close this thread as I never got the S3 race ready. I traded it for a Mille R which I raced....amazing bike but has now been sold to make room for a Daytona 955i race bike project. I may start a new thread.....but I will have many questions to ask too....
