Had to strip down the lawn scarifier today as it refused to spin up. Found a seized bearing that I drifted off without too much issue and it was off to the interwebs to find a new one. Cannot believe the joke prices garden machinery spares companies want for a simple 10x30x9 bearing! If it comes in a box marked Bosch it costs up to £30, whereas a bearing factor wants around £3 for a straight forward SKF. We have an on-site service and MoT centre where I currently work so I'll wander in there at lunchtime tomorrow and see if I can blag one.

Problem is that many people don’t know that most bearings, and indeed many parts are common across lots of things. They assume you’ve got to go back to the (in this case) garden machinery manufacturer for the part, or indeed a spares ‘specialist’ who is obviously going to take advantage of this ignorance.
It’s a godsend being an engineer sometimes, that is until others realise how practical/handy this makes you! :grinning:

LOL an old buddy was helping to restore a FockeWulf 189 that he’d found hanging in a tree in Russia (long story there), and when it was shot down the tail wheel had taken a direct hit and and the bearings were broken and corroded and couldn’t be rescued . So he takes it to his local tyre and brake place to ask if they had anything close that he could machine a sleeve to make fit. The old bloke in the shop takes one look at it and says
    “Messerschmidt or Kubelwagon?”
    “Actually it’s a FockeWulf”
“I have 13 in stock, how many do you want?”

That's what I did . Our on-site service centre does not stock bearings as they have a supplier five minutes walk away on the edge of our own site! Wandered down there at lunchtome and it was a fiver for cash, which I suspect the chap forgot to ring up... So I fixed the scarifier for a fiver instead of spending way over £300 on a new one. Result.
