Hallo folks. I'm two and a half years into my latest bike, a Street Twin, and looking to do some serious rides this year whilst in the UK. London to Ullapool and Highcross etc. I have a pair of Lomo 30l soft panniers that are cheap as chips but very good quality https://www.lomo.co.uk/acatalog/waterproof-motorcycle-soft-panniers-set.html I've used other Lomo kit for sailing, it's waterproof and well made. What I need advice upon is a rail or rack to carry this soft luggage. I've seen the Tec aftermarket rail which resembles the Triumph part A9518223 but comes in black also. It seems a little short? The other item I've considered is Givi TMT6407 but reviews say it is complicated to fit? Any advice on these two items or recommendation on others would be most welcome. Many thanks.
I have the Triumph waxed cotton panniers on my street twin and really like them. Also the long haul screen. It also works great. But here in California we don't get much rain. I understand that if it is wet out the waxed cotton might not be the best. But for me they work great. And look great.
I have been wondering about the Kappa waterproof soft 13ltr £80-100 with the TEC rails £45. If it works it would be like a half price waterproof version of Givi, but not sure if Kappa need their own rails though. The listings say they have quick release for Kappa rails, but not sure if that is the only way. Will let you know when I get answers and if I get them.
Update, couldn't get clear confirmation if they would work together so have taken the plunge/gamble and ordered them. Seems like it should work, but depends on the diameter of the rail and size of the clips on the bag. Not bad side bag and rail for £130 though, if it works!
Those panniers do look great but I’m put off by the prices here, and the size is a little small for what I want. I like the look of that screen, guess it keeps wind of chest but any higher too? Thanks for response
A very good price. Do let me know how you get on and post some pics of the rail and bag fitted. I’d like to get an idea of the clearance etc. How do you plan to fix the bag in place?
Yes will look at clearance and fit hope to use the clips and strap that come on the pannier. I've also ordered pipe clips to stop it sliding if it needs. Might have to solve a few problems to make it work. I must admit I miss-read your OP, realise now it was just the rail/rack that you are after, but will post pics if I can make it work.
I am 5' 9" and the screen does deflect the wind over my head and around my hands. It does a pretty good job.
The TEC rails arrived today, not got the pannier yet. The top horizontal bar is 12mm diameter, 24cm long before it starts to curve down, sorry, not good at pics. Will get some ACF50 on them before fitting. Reading the instructions, it should clear the shock by 10mm, bit concerned about the advice to hold the bottom rail near the end and pull it firmly if the clearance is not correct!
Are these the TEC rails you mean? If so, I had no problem fitting them - job done in minutes. Tighten the shock bolt up to 28Nm and the pillion footrest, silencer mount to 27 Nm.
No, I did mine on the side stand and found that the bolts lined straight up - do the top one first and you should be OK. Be interested to see what you think of the bag - had a look at their website and it looks pretty decent.
Very nice pannier/side bag arrived just now. It is clearly designed to fit on a 10mm rail, so the 12mm rail on the TEC is slightly too large. There are two clips for the rail and a strap with a buckle. The two clips are plastic, they are tough looking, but plastic, so I wouldn't be comfortable stretching them open. The strap and buckle also do not grip on much. It may be possible to get some kind of brackets to put on the rail, but I think I will call it quits and buy the correct frame.
Well that's a shame - would have gone for that if it had fit but you are right not to try and force it over the rail. It does seem as if this style of bag needs its own rail.
Nah, I had only offered one up to the pannier. TEC are great and were happy for me to return it. It was a decent rail though and only £45. I just really like the Kappa bag. By the way, fitted the TEC centre stand today, hard to get the spring on, but quite pleased with it, should make cleaning and checking the chain a bit easier.
Okay folks, I got the Tec rails (thanks for the tip) and Lomo bags. All fitted and working nicely. I made a 400 mile round trip to see me Mam in East Yorkshire and only thing I can complain about was I packed too lightly. These bags are huge and will be be ample for a few weeks away. Bit fiddly fastening them on, had to make sure no loose ends as I only used the supplied straps (I may get some security straps. Here's some pics below. I'll let you know how they are in a month or so but so far very pleased. Affordable, good quality/ well made. Only down side is now I have storage space I've been sent to the supermarket a few times to stock up, think I'll take the bags off until I'm ready to ride out.
