I’ve heard of keeping a close eye on the road surface but FFS that’s a bit extreme.

That last one reminds me of an old colleague Dave Edge. I was going to work on afters one day and in the mirror I saw a police bike had followed me up the exit sliproad of the M1 so I had a quick look and saw the roundabout was clear and entered at what I thought was a healthy lean angle onto the inside lane only for him to come round the outside of me with everything on the deck, stand, pegs, luggage, the lot, Bastid. And that was on a K100 lardy arse tourer !!!!:worried::worried:

That's a Vinnie with a typical period (late '50s early '60s) crash bar. That style of bar was fairly common on road bikes of the era, though they evolved into the "wrap around" style as the straight bar could often act as a pivot point in a big off and cause more damage by lifting the bike and launching it, rather than act as a slider with the curved style bars.

    Just my recollection.

    Edit :-

BTW., Surtees was a racing God and remains the only person to have won World Championships on 2 and 4 wheels. A real legend.

A early picture of John Surtees.

His crash helmet in those days was a pudding basin with a peak which were worn mostly by scooter riders.

In actual fact the one pictured on the young Surtees is most likely a cork lined EVEROAK hlemet with an integrated peak ...

which were more commonly used by scooter riders ....... rather than the 'pudding basin' type more commonly worn by motorcycle riders and racers of the era.

Way back in 1966 I was going out with a girl and her father would only let her ride pillion on my bike if she wore his old crash helmet which was an Everoak as above.

    What a lovely memory!

'66 was the year I first rode motorcycles (legally! AHEM!) and my first purchased helmet was an Everoak "Jet" probably in '67 or '68. These days it would be called an 'open face'. I was, of course, the dog's dangly bits once that new helmet was donned since, until then, I'd relied on my father's hand -me-down scooter helmet - not too dissimilar to the one pictured above, though in rather worse condition. Helmet laws? PAH!!

So, Jet helmet, Stadium goggles, white cuffed leather gauntlets (still got a pair!) but failed the test to become a real "rocker" because I couldn't afford a leather jacket. Sad but true.

Same here Adie 1966 open face Everoak jet helmet complete with stadium goggles but no white cuffed leather gloves. Bought them from Dugdales in Alvanley when I purchased my first road bike, a Tiger Cub and what a pile of shite it was :)
Sorry mate I had a leather jacket :yum and tried to stick coloured insulation tape down the arms to make it look like the latest road racers leathers circa 1967? Wasn’t successful the bloody tape used to come off after a few miles
