Hi I’ve just bought my first triumph,a 2005 speed triple 1050.As soon as I got the bike it started to struggle to change gear, mostly from 1st to 2nd,the gear shifter was solid,I adjusted the cable which helped temporarily but the problem keeps coming back.Ive changed the clutch cable and adjusted it to spec, changed the oil to fully synthetic, and fitted a new gear shift mechanism as I had an aftermarket part fitted.I suspect the clutch plates are sticking and need replacing but I just wanted to see if anyone else had this problem? Is it worth soaking the old plates in old overnight or is that just a temporary fix? Thanks any advice would be great

    Hi and welcome in Vinny
    Fantastic choice of bike

I have had a similar issue in a 2010 Speed Triple, not long after I bought it I discovered that when the engine got hot, the gear change started to get very stiff and almost impossible to find neutral.
I got a set of EBC clutch plates and new springs, swapped them out at the next oil change and the engine was like new
There was a realisation among us here on the forum that not enough oil reaches the clutch plates which can cause them to burn and stick, maybe also with not being used very often.

Get a set of clutch plates, springs (if you wish) and a gasket, watch a YouTube video on how to change the plates and you can be inside for lunch of kippers on toast

Try Square Deals EBC Clutch Plates and springs £65

    They also do the gaskets

Make sure when you fill with oil, the dip stick is screwed all the way in to get the proper level
Also make sure the stick is an original, otherwise for obvious reasons the level could be wrong.

The oil level being too high could cause a stiff clutch

Could be the clutch but if only really struggling from 1st to 2nd could be something in gearbox, not really that knowledgeable about it though, but someone on here will be. Just as a matter interest is, are the chain and sprockets in good condition and correctly adjusted as that will make a big difference to gear change.

Thanks for the advice I have been looking at EBC clutch plates and was thinking of giving them a try.Do the plates need soaked before fitting or can they be fitted dry? Love the bike apart from this issue so looking forward to getting it fixed so I can enjoy it properly. Thanks again
