Having not had a " big bike " for nearly 3 years and been belting about on the YBR125 as a commuter . I'm looking to treat myself in a few months once i get retired.

I took out a Thruxton 1200R today for a wee run from Edinburgh down the A7 to Heriot and back .Only 32 miles in total.

White with Vance and Hines. Nose fairing on it. Don't like the nose fairing or colour to be honest.

Will be a black 1200R for me . Maybe.

Fook me. Torque is amazing. It just pulls in every gear.

Ok. Been 4cyl chap all my days for big bikes. Had a shot on an SP2 over 12 years ago for about 15 minutes. Shat ma pants to be fair.

This is what i found myself on today.

Quite snatchy in traffic out of town. Maybe just me adjusting.

Once out on open road . This thing is crackers. Sound is awesome with Vance and Hines on it. Found it very comfortable once i adjusted myself and kept relaxing as i was aware that i was tensing up having been away from big bike status for so long.

To be honest i was a tad shitting ma pants. [IMG]

I needn't have worried. It hit 3 figures in a very quick shortshift. Slowed down and tried to see how good it pulled from low down in each gear. Well impressed.

Tried the brakes from a reasonable speed 3 figures.. . and one finger braking. Stops so very fast.

After riding the 125 so often. It felt very heavy on roundabouts, wasn't surprised. At 200kg plus , and my lack of big bike feel and confidence.

Downside. Sidestand is hidden under exhaust and the boots i was wearing ( old Alpinestars ) gave no movement to get it , had to flick it out by hand. OOOOH ERRR [IMG].

Heat from engine once back into town was a bit annoying on inside of knees. I had textine trousers on. . Tho i tend to hug a bike with my legs. Ended up with them out to cool down in Edinburghs glorious 20mph limits.

Will i buy one in September ?

Maybe. Though not from Two Wheels in Edinburgh after the shit that happened after demo when my wee YBR wouldn't start after a test ride on a 12 grand machine. Which from a cash buyer in September is crazy.

Hi and welcome, good summary of your test ride. Is there a story about your bike not starting after your test ride?
Whilst the Thruxton is a great bike you might want to consider the T120 or the Speedmaster, same engine but IMHO a more comfortable riding postion; just a thought..

I can vouch for the Speedmaster being a cracking bike, my Mrs loves it. I do have an issue with numb bum but I think it may be my ample proportions causing that :) They are great engines and the gearbox is so nice and smooth compared with other trumpets I have had. Even my Striple can be a pig neutral to first.

2 yrs in and no regrets. came from a K1300S. you mentioned the sidestand tang. took a bit of getting used to. use your heel instead of toe and it becomes easy.

I had full race Alpinestar boots on. Couldn't even get a heel on it.

I had a back operation 20 years ago. I actually find leaning forward a more comfortable position. Had a ZRX1100 and a Z750. Both of which i couldn't get comfy on.
Very starnge. Even commuting on YBR 125 11 miles through Edinburgh cases pain when i hit holes and bumps. And there are a lot these days

What mode were you riding? In continuous town traffic I stick it in rain mode, no snatch at all on throttle. Out on the open twisties, put it in sports mode!! It's fecking brilliant, especially in the Scottish Highlands with Andy C (riding the wasp) right up your chuff!! :p:yum:heart_eyes:

Ha! I recognise that one - also with Alpinestars! I've simply got in to the habit of dismounting first and then pushing the sidestand down with the toe of my right boot.

Go for the bike! If you loved the demo you'll love the R even more with the experience that comes through ownership. I bought mine in June and can't describe the kick I get every time I ride it - and every time I simply look at it.

As my Czech wife says, "The coffin doesn't have pockets" - which translates to "you can't take it with you - so enjoy it!"

Get one. I got one 4 months ago. Black 2016 MY with 700 miles on the clock. Absolutely love it, great fun to ride and great to look at. Best buy I've made in a long time if not ever.

    +1 on the get one!

I have had my Thruxton R for just over 2 years. Black of course (the best colour), although I noticed Triumph don't seem to be offering black anymore for new Thruxton R's and have replaced it with a racing green (Hmmm, not sure yet, perhaps I need to see one in the flesh). I'm lucky to run 2 bikes, but every time I get back on my Thruxton R I just fall in love with it all over again. Just had it professionally cleaned (ready for the DGR) and it looks better than when I picked it up from new (if that's actually possible!). Also it gets so much attention every time I go out on it. Complete strangers come up to you and just gaze at it. I find it surprisingly comfortable (although I don't have the fairing and lowered kit) and have done a 300 mile one day blast on it this summer (but admittedly that was pushing the comfort zone a bit).

The side stand thing is easy once you get used to it, and folks on here have already called out using your heel. Simples.

Just put your deposit down and get it ordered!

After you have ridden a thruxton, you wont be able to forget about it, you will go have another look, have a think, it will eat you away, until you buy one, i also have a Yamaha FZ6, i got my thruxton R in matt black three or four weeks ago, the more you ride it the more you love it, wish i had got mine along time ago, so smooth through the gears with amazing power, my wife loves it too, as i got the dual comfort seat, she says its alot better on the back than the Yamaha, when you are in town you could of clicked it into rain mode to adjust the throttle response .
Originally i was set on waiting to get a new green one in the new year but seen a black one and had to get it, the green does look lovely tho.
although its a bit colder now ive never noticed the engine heat even when ive ridden it in jeans, so maybe it was the slow speeds making the engine hot. As for the fairing i found that at speed it just channels the wind into your head, more for show than being a fairing you can get behind because you can't, its too low….
it can be a bumpy ride through lanes if going fast but on the open road its a dream, as said by many in this forum, this bike does really make you smile every time you ride it…. real facts.

High risk of dropping it if you are dismounting first to put he side stand down , just like i told my nephew, two weeks later he dropped it………

Once you get used to where the stand is it's quite easy to access with your heel. they are a bit snatchy in road or race mode around town but I can put up with that, plus it gives you an excuse to give the throttle a blip.. Comfort wise I'm ok for about 75 miles or and hour and twenty before I need to have a seat break. Done 350 mile in a day with a few breaks no problem.
