Few beers, few hands of crib, few more beers, kip, coffee, few more beers, meal, kip etc etc it'll soon pass.
I'd rather spend the time riding to be honest! Appreciate I'm lucky in that I can leave home and (assuming no hold ups or delays) be through the tunnel and in France in under 3 hours.
For me it's about 300 miles to Dover on shite roads, in shite traffic and in usually pouring rain, not a nice start to any trip. Portsmouth is about 270 miles and once I get past the M6, the A34 isn't too bad. Add on to all that the trek through France and the ferry to Santander or Bilbao looks good.
I'm thinking it would be nice to spend some time in the Picos mountains and some time on the coast. Maybe get on the beach, have a swim, get rid of some of that pongy pongy sweat, sample some sea food ???
According to worldweatheronline, sep 2017 was good for number of sunny days, average daily temperatures and low rainfall. Just saying.
September is very nice in the Picos. If you want to spend an hour or two having a swim/relaxing on the beach your never that far away from the coast as the Picos basically run parallel to the coast. You have a choice of coast roads or inland roads and as I posted previously they’re great roads and scenery. I’ve ridden down through France to the Picos not using the peage and it’s a Full 2days riding and we were tramping on. Ok perhaps we could have picked a more direct route, we landed at Le Havre with first night at Limoges and second night at Bayonne then crossed the Pyrenees on the third morning, returning we’ve stopped in Montauban and Poitiers before catching the return ferry from Le Havre. I must admit that the last time we sailed to Santander the ferry departed Portsmouth early evening and you had a full day at sea, by lunch time I was bored before docking at about 18:30. Also sailed to Santander departing Portsmouth and Plymouth mid-day ish and found it better as the nights sleep broke the journey up, also you had more time to get to your first nights accommodation.
We've done both and the Plymouth to Santander is the best one,get's in about 12.15. Did the Portsmout to Santander which was delayed and we didn't get off till 8pm.
I know Andy that's why I said I was lucky living where I do. Anyone living in Kent has got it made! Didn't necessarily mean I would ride down through France, just that I could ride a good distance into Europe whilst you are all bobbing up and down on the good ship "Boredom". At least Pompey is only 35 minutes away for me!

You could ride down through France and then come back through Santander,or the other way about. Saves some time,doesn't get to boring.
