Ha ha! I remember those start gates, they brought them in to stop you jumping the start, and as you can see they work! The trick was to look not dead ahead but sideways down the line to judge when you could get a clean start.

You would be amazed what goes into skips. Some years ago - I was vehicle verification officer for the military vehicle trust. My son ran through the house stating that a man was building a tent on my front lawn. On inspection it was a hornet malkara missile launcher - he took it from a skip at a company that manufactures sights. It is now in the war museum.
