Today was the funeral of tha Lancashire/Cumbria blood biker Russell Curwen (49). I knew him through work, and he was a sound lad... I couldn’t attend the drive past as I was scrubbed in theatre, but I know a lot of my team appreciated the several hundred bikers who attended and participated. It was moving to be still working in one of the places he helped with his volunteering service, as I could hear the distant rumbling of bikes.
    Rest in peace dude.

I saw this posted in the servssl forum, the newspaper report a very sad affair. I believe we had someone representing our area at the funeral.
Bloodbikng is a very worthy and rewarding cause and would recommend anyone who has the time to take s look at volunteering wether on a bike, car or more importantly controlling from your home, as with no controller those 5 riders are useless!
I have been volunteering since November and mostly you don’t know what these boxes of platelets or blood are being used for but now and again a very grateful person in the path lab will let you know and it’s very gratifying to be told it’s for a new born undergoing an emergency op or someone bleeding out on the table. I recently started replenishing the air ambulance stocks and they are pleased to let us know that last year our service allowed them to perform over 200 on site blood transfusions and saved at least 50 would be gonners! That’s just in the Kent Surrey Sussex region alone.
    Full sympathy to his family

Well done, controllers are the linchpins in the service as without them the system falls apart. We recently got a call to get a sample from a sick child in a london hospital to a hospital in Chester involving a relay of 4 bloodbike groups, couldn’t have been done without the coordination of the controllers. The unsung heroes of the organisation!

Agree with you there but also think that the fundraisers are the linchpin of it also as without them raising the funds there would be no controllers or bikes for the riders lets not forget them too. Everyone does there bit for this great cause.

Everyone in any of these groups is an equal partner in all they do, no one part could function without the others, and they all deserve the same respect whatever their role within the group.
