So, I've found various discussions online about quickshifters, with various opinions ranging from the "you're not a real rider if you use a qs" (obviously) to "I've forgotten I even have a clutch", and various advice about how to use a quickshifter. But I know all quickshifters and bike configs are different, so what is the deal with the Triple quickshifter? Basically I've been pretty lazy, I got the bike, tried the quickshifter and was like "game-changer". I use it *often* to say the least, even going from 1st to 2nd which I've read is a big no-no. But honestly, if the revs are high enough and I'm doing a decent speed, 1st to 2nd is smooth, and then 2nd-6th is a breeze. I do use the clutch to go from 1st to 3rd if I'm riding slow in city traffic to avoid that jerky *clunk*, but do I need to? I'm not looking for an opinion on quickshifters, I know that some people like them and some people don't, I'm just wondering what's the right way to use this one?
By what you have written above it sounds like you pretty much have it sussed, I use mine in much the same way and it changes smoothly pretty much whatever revs I am using, in town I use the clutch for the same reasons as you and also because if you use QS you tend to make too rapid progress compared to the rest of the traffic that doesn't have it! I had one on my old 675R and that was me pretty much hooked, wouldn't want a bike without one now, I must say though I would like the auto blipper down shift that the new Speed Triple has, I expect it will be on next years Street RS so they can justify putting the price up!
Yea, me not being mechanically minded doesn't really understand why it isn't there but I guess there's a pretty good reason. I'd definitely pay a bit more for it though, I've spent money on more useless things for my bike
I use the QS on mine pretty much all the time, although like you have noticed first to second isn't quite as smooth so use the clutch around town.
Didn’t use it at all for the first 250 odd miles, now for me it’s mostly a motorway overtake tool. I live in Aberdeen where traffic is a Cnut, constant stop start so the QS is wasted...until the open roads where I stick to the speed limits at all times.. Open road, track mode...QS....oh my..
Had a 675R loan bike and enjoyed using it (although I'm by no means a particularly fast or skilled rider). The new Tiger 1200 I tested had one fitted with the auto-blip down-change - not sure it's necessary on a Tiger but still good fun.
I view quickshifters suspiciously as being for people with limp ankles ......and a dim understanding of constant mesh gearboxes, sequential selection and synchromesh superfluity...... I have a limp language!
I can see the point on a track bike but you should be able to do clutchless upshifts anyway - not that I can but all the journos say they do them all the time.

Clutchless upshifts without a quick shifter mean shutting the throttle, with a QS you don't, therefore faster as less loss of drive ... simples!
Love my QS would hate to have a bike without one now, Saying that not essential and I do avoid the 1st to 2nd change on the QS - mostly .
